    Re: Bottom Hive Body empty

Poor wording in my last sentence! How about "that you yourself are not fully comfortable with" rather than "that you know is wrong."

    Re: Bottom Hive Body empty

It is very simple, and a rule new beekeepers can easily remember: every pesticide has a detailed label, on which it tell every approved use for that pesticide. This includes baits and all...

    Re: Bottom Hive Body empty

I think I would remove the empty box to prevent wax moths from moving in to real estate below the brood and honey that the bees are not working this winter. Adding the box back on top in late winter...
  4. Re: Taking some advice cost me around 30 supers/brood boxes

Wow, what a rough year. In my state BT is not approved for use in hives and comb, so sale of honey from adulterated hives is not legal, as with any unapproved pesticide, organic or synthetic.

    Eastern NC swarm

Well, just got word and photos of the first swarm of the season here in Eastern North Carolina (it actually was in Greenville, a bit west of the coast). They were hanging from the inside of a deck...

    Thrilling hive opening

What a great day. I opened both hives to check their progress. One has three 8 frame, medium boxes of brood in the middle with tons of pollen, plus honey and nectar all around. The other was a...

Bees flying, hard on spring fever

It is 65 degrees here today and there is a traffic jam at the doors of both hives. More pollen coming in than I have ever seen in my short time with the bees. It is just too beautiful. After being...
  8. First inspection of first overwintered hives

Went into the hives today for the first time since late summer. We didn't know what to expect, as this is our first year. Hive 1 had a good 12 frames of bees (we use 8 frame mediums) on a little...

Working dandelion, not even 50 degrees

I don't have much to add except my amazement to see the bees out working dandelion in the front yard today. Sunny and about 49 degrees. Everything was iced over until 10:00 am! Only one hive is...

First winter, they keep amazing me

43 degree nights, 55 degrees today, strong 15 knot north winds, and the entrance reducers I added this morning (reduced to about 1/3 full entrance) are causing traffic jams at the doors as the girls...

Eastern NC, swarms already in March 2007

Last spring the hives had built up so strongly in Eastern North Carolina that there were swarms issuing in March - so plan on early build up if we have another mild winter. The NC State faculty says...

Sort of looks like assasin, but not quite. I have forwarded the photo to the entomologist at NCSU for positive ID, I'll let you know if it is assasin or something else. Thanks for the link. The bug...

What are the bees trying to tell us?

Recent threads show bees consolidating into two of three brood chambers and drones being evicted. Last week mine started moving honey down from supers into the brood nest. All this sound like what...

    No dearth in eastern NC

Apparently the drought and heat have not killed the nectar flow in this area. Was told by a very reliable beekeeper today that in the last 12 days his hive drew out 7 frames of foundation and filled...

    Can you buy equipment there?

I'll be there Thursday and Friday. Do any of the equipment sellers attend with merchandise? I need some woodenware, pins, etc., and would love to save the shipping cost by getting it at the meeting.

Thanks carbide, that helps. Since super is shallow and box is medium, however, what I might do is just harvest the honey from two medium frames on either side of the brood frame, and replace with...
