  1. Re: Wintering over at altitude...did I do something wrong?

Good luck with your new hives. Mites were likely the cause of the hives demise. The schedule I follow is I pull honey supers around August 1 and treat for mites. This year I'm going to start...

Re: Pro Feeder location. top or bottom deep?

Top- What Brett said. I found the inside positions also help keep the syrup warmer during cold spells, so the bees use it.

    Re: New Package seems decimated

The weather here is going into a warming trend with temps in the 70s near 80. I would put them in a 5 frame nuc. Insulate the lid with foam board on top. The frame feeder will work until we get...
  6. Re: Front Range Snow & extended Swarm Advisory

Colobee is correct it is the overstocking of a hive with frames of brood is the Bee Bomb. The double nuc is what JW described except the colonies share 1 common lid, but 2 seperate inner covers. A...
  7. Re: Front Range Snow & extended Swarm Advisory

Vance: Your Front Range up their. You get to enjoy the wind just like we do. Feel free to jump in! We could get a couple of inches of snow up where I'm at. Hopefully all this moisture will help the...
  8. Re: Front Range Snow & extended Swarm Advisory

I split the low elevation hives last week and I split the higher elevation hives this week. I'm going add supers down low. It looks like a pretty good warm up starting Tuesday. Let the flow begin.

    Re: Hive placement and bears

Bears will tear a shed apart if there is something inside they really want. An electric fence is the only way to go in bear country.

    Re: Mann Lake Pro Health

If you like top feeders- Betterbee sells a BeeMax insulated top feeder. That would be your best bet in CO as the two times of year you feed syrup we have cold nights. Check their website. You would...

    Re: Mann Lake Pro Health

They don't work well this time of year. The syrup gets cold and they will not use it. I use frame feeders and they have been going through syrup like crazy. Capco's/ Ft. Collins Honey may have a...

    Re: Alternative to beekeeper gloves

I use light thin leather work gloves. They keep the propolis off, but bees can sting through them. The sting is not as bad through the gloves.

Re: Cloake Board with Nicot System

    A couple of things.
Are you confident you can find, catch, and place the queen in the Nicot box? Last season I kept the queen in a Nuc box so she was easier to find. This year I have breeder hives....

    Re: Warning to the wise

I've been feeding pollen patties for about a month. I left sugar bricks in the hives. My bottom brood boxes still had a lot of honey. So I started rotating boxes when the dandelions popped. I Started...
  18. Re: Front Range Snow & extended Swarm Advisory

I was just out plowing our road and driveway. It's like plowing wet cement. The sun came out and it warmed up to 45 and the bees were flying. Also join the community group.
  19. Re: Front Range Snow & extended Swarm Advisory

A couple of things I do when installing packages:
    1.) Insulate the lid
    2.) Provide warm syrup
3.) Place about a 1/2 to a cup of sugar on paper on top of the bars directly over the bees. I mist it...

Its supposed to be in the mid to upper 50s along the Front Range lower elevation areas on Saturday. Colder Sunday and Monday. If the weather allows I would transfer it Saturday.
