Re: Introducing a Queen to a Nuc

Also, I like to wait at least 2 hours on a small nuc, longer for bigger hives. I would also wait a little longer if I moved them. If you install a queen and can easily move the bees off the cage,...

Re: Introducing a Queen to a Nuc

Did you introduce her the first time right after you made the nuc?
  3. Re: Bee-n, a while since I posted. latest inspection with pics

Yeah, hard to see on a phone screen.
  4. Re: Bee-n, a while since I posted. latest inspection with pics

You can always try a split. Worst case is you recombine if either side fails. I'm not sure about your area and wintering but a nuc would work well to split and get virgin mated. I would think you...
  5. Re: Bee-n, a while since I posted. latest inspection with pics

Looks like a queen cup not a cell, I can't see any larva in there. If it's empty, it's fine.
  6. Re: Thought's on enough time for them to draw

I was thinking along the same lines. Thanks for the input.
  7. Thought's on enough time for them to draw

So I have one that is packed, 5 mediums high and queen laying up into the 4th medium. I have another 2 medium hive with mated queen, she has only been laying for a couple weeks. I have a 5 frame...

    Re: Propolis Honey

It's just honey that is infused with propolis. I bought some from a guy a long time ago that was very dark and don't recall how he made it. I was hoping someone knew how.

    Propolis Honey

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has made propolis honey and if so how do you make it? Thanks!
  12. Re: Doesn't look violent enough to be robbing, but

Well I'd say better safe than sorry. You want to get it stopped as fast as possible. Sounds like you did that. I'd say more the feeder and reducing or robber screen are a good way to go. Keep us...
  13. Re: Doesn't look violent enough to be robbing, but

I would put the screen on at night or very early morning if you want to have them on. I would just reduce the entrance to a 2 bee size entrance and watch. If you leave the robber screen on, make...
  14. Re: Doesn't look violent enough to be robbing, but

When did you put the robber screens on? A lot of times it will take the foragers a couple of days to figure out the robber screens and it might just be that.

Re: NewBeek started with 2 hives

I would give them a frame or two from the other hive. That hive won't have a noticeable decline. If not I'll pay for shipping for the queen to me :)
  16. Re: Are there clear indicators of when to release new queen from push in cage?

I usually place the queen cage on the top bars and watch the reaction. If the bees are easily moved and fanning, then put her in. However, if they are stinging the cage and stuck on like velcro,...

    Re: Bees making an entrance

Thanks for the tip. If they don't propolize it, I'll duct tape it.

    Re: Bees making an entrance

I'm sure they will, or hope they will. It's on the northwest side. That is very cool. They are certainly fascinating.

    Re: Bees making an entrance

Thanks for all the reply's. I opened up the bottom board about and inch and it seems that they have stopped making the crack bigger.

    Re: Bees making an entrance

Yes I do have an upper entrance. I thought that might be what's going on, so I slid out the bottom board a bit to hopefully help. It's been cool and rainy, so I had closed it up. Thanks for the...

    Bees making an entrance

I haven't seen this before and couldn't find anything that went with my situation in the fourms. I went out to the hives yesterday and one of the hives has been making a small crack between the...
  24. Re: Pros and Cons of leaving a supper on over winter

From what I've read, bees don't heat the hive, they heat the cluster.

    Re: Robbing problems

I found it best to do it late at night or early morning before the sky even starts to lighten. Then they have to come out that way and it confuses them less. At least in my experience. YMMV.
