300 feet?! That's not possible on a small lot. :( We got 3.5 acres, but I'd have to climb the mountain and put it up there some place to get 300 feet away. Is 100 feet not enough?

Thanks Michael Bush. Point noted that I should let the bees decide when they have enough drone comb built. :)
And thanks for your suggestions, Michael W. Your suggestions are practical, and...
Hi Chrissy,
Yes, it was free-built comb, and there is other worker brood, mainly in frames with standard founcation. I was just a bit alarmed that my bees' first attempt at building their own comb...
Hi Doug,
Thanks for this :) It makes sense.
Since I got no reply here, I asked on another list. But I was told to put the drone comb in the freezer for 3 or 4 days, with no explanation as to...
We got our bees in deeps and I'm trying to change to mediums, besides trying to change to small cells.
I pulled out what frames I could & put in HSC (cut down) and empty medium frames instead....
Huh? I don't get it!
You mean there's something good about attracting ants??
They might have been part of the experimental program when we couldn't import bees from the US due to varroa. I dunno ... But I understand there are five beeks who are continuing the five lines...
Yes, our hives have bees with different colors in the same hive -- some totally black and some gold and black. I wondered about that ... thought maybe one hive was combined before we got it, but I'm...
A local former bee inspector here shared with us a few weeks ago that he used to try to keep AFB alive in one hive for demonstration purposes. He found it difficult because his bees kept cleaning it...
That's good news for us who already know about your site and have noted the specific URLs & would like acess without having to copy it. (I copied it!) However, I don't think that the archives of the...
Ross, those links don't seem to be working any more. If you still have those pictures up, it would be nice if you could send us new links. :)
Thanks. :)
Kawayanan expressed my thoughts exactly! :) (I double-checked to be sure I hadn't posted the note!! :) )
Ours actually seem to have a little more black at the end of the body. But most of them still have two gold body segments.
I suppose it doesn't matter what they are, as long as they're healthy &...
I second that!! :)
Okay, I confess I have no experience, except reading & direct observation.
We just bought a couple of hives which included some old comb -- most of it on plastic foundation and some of it on wax...
Just curious... This is such a clear picture that I wonder what race of bees these are.
We just bought a couple of hives, and we were told the queens were "mongrels" (i.e. local queens). Most of...
Since you've already had some evidence of effectiveness, this sounds like a sure thing for you. :)
What my mom did was to set a jar of bees on her hand to let them sting her. (Bees confined in a...
Well, according to Barbara Mikkelsen of Snopes.com, the status of this rumor is "undetermined." But she seems to view it with a rather large dose of skepticism. ;)...
Thymol is not yet approved in Canada. (Search http://www.honeycouncil.ca) Americans can buy the convenient Thymomite pads at http://www.members.shaw.ca/orioleln/Thymol.htm (in British Columbia), but...
H'mm ... that's an interesting observation.
So where do they get the water in the winter?
I do have an idea that the 2:1 syrup is less likely to ferment because it is a fully saturated...
Yes, that's what it usually means. (For example, see the Wikipedia entry http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Beekeeping/Recipes_for_the_Bees)
That looks like a 1:2 recipe. ;)
I believe so. :) I believe...
We just picked up a couple hives of bees (2 deeps each) last week from another beekeeper. One colony had almost zero stores, the other had plenty. The advice was to feed 2:1 sugar syrup at least to...
H'mm ... that seems the most reasonable conclusion for what I see. Thanks. :)
I guess it will have to remain a mystery. ;)
Thanks for the input. :)
I don't think so. I recognize crystallized honey, and this stuff is literally the texture and color of white chalk.
What mystifies me is that the chalky stuff is on top of something that looks...
