    Fantastic Early TBH Inspection

I'm in lower south-east TN and we had a really nice warm day last Saturday. I decided to take some time and check out the inside of my TBH.

I did expect to see a decent population because my other...

    Re: Splitting TBH - Distance

I think Oldtimer has some good tips.

I did a split last year and actually did it a little opposite of what Oldtimer suggested, but still had great results. Either way, I dont think the distance...

    Re: Top Bar Hive Questions

Leo, first of all welcome to the site and congrats on finding an interest in bees.

My only suggestion to you is this.... Dont take things too serious. This is one promise I can make you, there...
  4. Re: Has anyone had a hive join another hive in mid-winter???

Cool. Glad to hear that it's not extremely uncommon. They are very close together. Probably 4 or 5 feet apart.
  5. Has anyone had a hive join another hive in mid-winter???

I have (or had) two top bar hives this past summer that I'm overwintering now. I started my original hive from a package and then ordered a new queen and made a split later. Oddly enough my second...

Hey beepro, the good thing is you learned something! Obvisouly the bad thing is that lesson has put you in a tight spot.

I suspect you are correct in thinking that the new Italians have something...

    Apistan Strips in TBH

Anyone used Apistan Strips in their top bar hive?

I figured you could still hang them between your bars just like they would hang in a langstroth. Anyone used them before? If so, any problems &...

    Re: any experience combining TBH's???

Awesome, that's really good to know. I always seem to learn something new with bees.... usually it's through making a decision and seeing what happens. Now I feel a little more informed at least....

    Re: any experience combining TBH's???

    really?

I didn't think that number of bars would be enough to last.

If that is plenty to get through a mild winter then maybe I wont combine. Any other opinions?

    any experience combining TBH's???

I realize there is a very similar thread running right now but my question differs slightly... figured I would start a new one.

I'm confident I need to combine both of my hives. I made a split...

    Re: Feeding Fondant Idea

Oddly enough I was just sitting at my desk at work about 2 days ago thinking about a very similar topic.... I got to wondering if there is a way I could mix up something that is almost hard. If you...

Has anyone ever experimented with any other "main" ingredients.... I was sitting here thinking of different possibilities to get more protien in the mix. I think they make an unflavored protien...

Why use brewers yeast in pollen substitute?

simple question... why is it that all the pollen substitute recipes I find call for brewers yeast over any other type of yeast? It's much easier to find a type of baking yeast. Any idea?

    concerns about bucket feeding

I currently have 2 top bar hives that haven't stored up very much capped honey so far. I'm going to start feeding either today or in the next couple of days.

    I have a 1 gallon container that I can...

Re: TBH, How much space to give them?

Personally I dont think it matters too much... Both of my TBH's are open the full length of the hive... little over 4'.

I originally used follower boards to keep the space constricted until they...

    Re: hive to small

Any reason you would be opposed to a new hive?

My first suggestion would be to go ahead and build a new one if possible. If your bees survive the winter you'll be looking for more room come spring...

Re: 5:3 fall sugar water mix

Anyone know how close just using a quart mason jar for measurement would get this ratio???

Example... 5 quarts Sugar;3 quarts Water.

I'm thinking it's got to be pretty close but not exact.

by the way, I do put the jar inside of the hive upside down with small holes poked in the lid. I didn't mention that in my original post but figured I might as well throw that in there.

Re: When and if to harvest honey

If you really want to then go ahead and do it. Worst case scenario is that your hive doesn't have quite enough reserves for the winter and you have to feed them.

Re: When and if to harvest honey

Being in New York I would assume your winters can be pretty harsh and a bit more lengthy than southern beek's winters. With that being said and knowing that your hive is pretty new you might want to...
