    Re: Queen piping

It is far louder than I expected, I just happened to have my phone whith me when I heard it and got the recording. If you experience it you will know as soon as you hear it.
  2. Re: How to keep bees away from snowcone stand?

  5. Re: Better than we could have possibly hoped for

This is my experience also, 3 days the fall is incredible!

    Re: Split gone bad

Well if they didn't destroy all but 1-2 I would have. If you have 9-10 queen cells and more than one hatches you will end up having swarms that take part of your population. That would put you in a...

    Re: Brood chamber maintenance

Yep, there are bees on mine too, they don't mind having a box above their heads. I do like the queen excluder idea!

Sorry I think you mis-understood what I was getting at.....you said:

    "but...

    Re: Brood chamber maintenance

I wouldn't think 3 years is "jumping right in and start rotating comb out". However the chemical contamination is not only what you may put in the hive, it is herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, ect...

    Re: Brood chamber maintenance

What type of top are you using? I set my telescoping top up-side down on the ground and set my supers across it. If they are heavy with honey I have been setting them down one at a time. Then you...

    Re: Brood chamber maintenance

The research is pretty cut and dry, old comb does harbor pesticides and other chemicals that can affect your bees. But still, it is a personal choice.

    "Using combs of CCD-affected colonies...

    Queen piping

I've heard of this but never witnessed it until last night. I was looking for a new queen to mark her and I just followed the piping. After marking with one of those nifty racing numbers (first one...

Re: Start with one or two hives?

Absolutely! I caught my first swarm (yay free bees!) Then I knew I was hooked.

I successfully wintered one hive from a swarm I caught the last day of July in 2014. Spent the winter building...

    Re: Goldenrod?

It is funny how I "noticed" these things before being a beekeeper.....Now I take note and wonder about the nectar flow......life will never bee the same
  22. Re: Found Queen Cups during Inspection! Help!

85% is not very good when looking for your queen! However.....follow the advice here and you will be good! If you don't find the queen or eggs/brood, give them a frame of eggs/young brood. If you...

    Re: Honey Extractor

Just look at your options, most of Little Giant's bee products are relabeled (or at least look like it) and are quite expensive compared to say Mann Lake or Brushy Mountain. I'm betting it would...

Re: How long to redraw combs?

Thanks for the replies, I made a simple one last night (I think the bucket one Steve mentioned) I'm only doing a few frames this season but I'm sure I'll have to buy an extractor for next year. I...
