Re: Foundationless frames. Wire or not.

When the comb is close to the bottom bar use your hive tool to make a couple notches in the bottom of the comb and twist it down to the bottom bar. Sometimes they will attach that to the bar.

Re: Jar feeder on a nuc

Is there a reason the jars are always in the middle instead of the front end of the nuc so if it leaks the syrup will not spill on the whole cluster.
  3. Re: How do you keep nuc clusters from freezing overwinter?

And NBEE if you want to build medium double nucs that equal four frame deeps I have built some six frame double nucs out of scrape lumber that I like better than the four framers. But I like to...
  4. Re: How do you keep nuc clusters from freezing overwinter?

It is not all that much work to make a double medium nuc box or that expensive. You just make a shallow saw cut on each inside of the medium box and cut out a piece of thin plywood to fit in the box...

Re: Feisty Bees in Medium Supers

I have some 8 frame mediums with different numbers of boxes and maybe I'm not doing things right but I never do a frame by frame inspection. I just look at what I want to see and go to the next hive....

Re: Deep Frame Nuc transition to Medium Supers

That is the simple way to do it. Just use two boxes until they build them out and move the deeps to the outside when they start raising brood in the mediums. Then take them out when there is not any...

    Re: oxalic acid treatment ?

Haven't heard this method. How early in the spring do you start? Do you vaporize while honey supers are on the hive?

Re: Is My Hive Doomed this Winter?

You could have taken a feather and gently brushed the bees out of the way to put the fondant down. I always keep a feather in my pocket when I'm in a hive, comes in handy sometime.

    Re: Ultra Bee?

I feed UltraBee dry and the bees have really worked it. I can't put patties in the hive because of SHB. The bees won't bother it if there is a real pollen flow but will work it during dearth periods....

Re: First Winter on 8 frame mediums

I would not bother them this late in the season. they will move up to the honey as they need it. the empty boxes below will not be a problem.

I lifted the back of some hives today and a couple felt light that weren't a month and a half ago. I thought they were good then but I'm going to put some sugar on them .
  20. Re: Trick to getting bees to notice pollen substitute?

    Re: Rural Neighbors complaining

I agree with the pollen substitute. Its warm and they are trying to gather so give them some dry ultra bee at your place and the problem will be solved.

It is warm here in middle TN and if you don't think your bees have enough stores add some dry sugar on top of the frames. And if they stopped raising brood in Nov. I doubt they will start back...
  25. Re: Turn two hives into three (next year) - How To?

To answer two of your questions yes you can take a frame or two of brood and bees from each hive and put them together in a new box. Giving them a mated queen puts them a month ahead in building up....
