Re: My Ant Proof Hive Stand Actually Works!

    Goat,

How big are your cups? I use 2" in diameter cups mounted on a 1" pipe. Not much room to slip down. If you have wider cups, you can use stiff mesh hardware cloth screen cut to the size of...
  2. Re: Dumbest thing you ever bought for beekeeping?

Buying all 10 frame boxes. I had to spend the following winter cutting them all down to 8's.

Re: My Ant Proof Hive Stand Actually Works!

    Chris,

In post #7 on this thread I created a materials list. The list along with the photo's are the "tutorial" I posted for instructions. I bought everything at Home Depot already sized to fit....

    Re: MAQS paper wrap dissolved

The shelf life of MAQS are only a couple of months so it's possible that being stored that long in the tub caused the paper to dissolve. It's anyone's guess on how effective your application will be...

    Re: Mann Lake vented suit

My XL Mann Lake vented jacket was too big for me and I'm 5' 10", 190. I wound up getting a L and using the XL for mentoring.
  8. Re: pulling my hair out over these big black ants!

My nucs and hives have been ant free ever since I took the time to build these stands.

  9. Bee Boxes That Odfrank Doesn't Brag About

Here's a pic of Ollie's new honey supers. Now for some reason, he hasn't bragged about these!

Re: Free maxant hat giveaway - details inside

Just received my hat, thanks Chris and Jake! Ollie is extremely jealous
  12. Re: Dumbest thing you ever bought for beekeeping?

An uncapping roller from Mann Lake, worthless!
  13. Re: 5-Gal Water Bottle Extension Swarm Catcher

I've never seen anyone dump bees into a plastic bag. Why didn't you use a nuc or hive box?

Re: Beekeeping in Merced City Limits?

There are many cities here in the Bay Area that have ordinances against beekeeping but that really doesn't stop anyone. Most municipalities don't care even if it's illegal as long as there are no...

    Re: Queen identification by coloring?

I call those dark colored bees German. Here in SF, those darker bees are common in cutouts. I had a queen that looked exactly like that in a colony I removed from a PGE electrical box. One of the...
  16. Re: What should I do? New package & Supercedure Cell

I would start another nuc with the old queen and leave the queen cell in the original nuc. For some reason, packages sometimes don't like the queen they were matched up with.
  17. Re: Small hive beetles in San Francisco Bay Area?

We get several every once in a while here in SF. No major infestations however.

  19. Re: Its that time of year for the Annual Ollie OD Frank swarmathon competition

I don't need a fancy bait box to catch swarms. I just use wax coated cardboard from Mann Lake.

  20. Re: Its that time of year for the Annual Ollie OD Frank swarmathon competition

You have to understand that Ollie is not a normal person. He's obsessive/compulsive when it comes to anything that's free. His utter cheapness is his strenght. He once surrounded my SF apiary with...

  22. Re: Its that time of year for the Annual Ollie OD Frank swarmathon competition

We need a David to stand up to Ollie the Goliath, although he's resorted to buying packages this year. Maybe this is a good season to take him on!
  23. Re: Did a mite count, got 8-9 in 1 cup of bees! HELP!

I view them as good beekeepers who are lucky.
  24. Re: Did a mite count, got 8-9 in 1 cup of bees! HELP!

Every hive has mites. It's a matter of keeping the mite population at a managable level. MAQS every summer before August 15th kills enough mites to survive the winter with no brood break here in...

Re: Any idea what breed bee this is?

I call those German. I have several black bee hives like that. They were swarms though so who knows. Is there a such thing as a true bee breed anymore?
