Sticky: Re: squarepeg 2015 treatment free experience

It looks like Alabama is in the deep snow, not the deep South.

Thanks for all the updates; I'm vicariously learning through your posts. I've watched the storms slide north of us, but we have only...

And I thought it was to select the size of swarm you wanted to catch....
  3. Re: Horizontal Comb - how would bees use it?

On my first cutout I left a piece of comb on the bottom for the bees to clean up. The SHB got there first and the bees couldn't get to the bottom side. That was a very nasty smell and the bees...

    Re: Anyone have musical SHB?

If you hear banjo music, you've probably had too much "sugar water" from Rader's neck of the woods. :)
  5. Re: Long Hive with Lang frames-multi use. Production or queen rearing

I see you repeated the grooved sides from your old design. Is it worth the effort for the bees to hang on or is there another objective?
  6. Re: Long Hive with Lang frames-multi use. Production or queen rearing

Very nice. I wish I made mine out of 2x. 1x lumber warps too much over the 4 ft length.

Re: Oh the joys no one mentions

I've been planning a split and decided to let them build a couple more weeks. We have quite a buffer in the city, but it still is "winter".

    Re: Beekeeping routine?

I'll agree. With my computer/engineering background, I like black and white steps. Although the bees are great engineers, some of them have much more artistic influence and the "rules" don't apply....
  9. Re: Uhoh, mixup on my equipment, now what?

I started with a ktbh that proved difficult in a cutout. The next cutout was under a shed with comb that perfectly fit a medium frame, so I built 8 frame medium stuff. I'm currently headed to long...

    Re: Foundationless frame question....

Assume the desire is to be all foundationless and no comb is available. Could you wrap a couple of frames in newspaper to create a temporary guide? Sort of a follower board. Would they just make a...
  14. Re: Thoughts and views of plastic vs. metal excluders.

I'm getting ready to modify some for my long hives. Is filling in with foam better than solid wood? Does it help eliminate gaps from uneven edges?

    Re: First check of 2015

I grew up in Kansas; I've had a bit of experience with a snow shovel and ice. It is one of the reasons i'm in Texas.

Unfortunately, people down here don't even know how to drive in a little rain....

Don't spill LGO in your tool box..... I've also found they locate used queen clips quickly.

Mine are still coming back with pollen. The way this weather is going, they may think it is spring already.

  23. Poll: Re: Treat for Varroa mites or let them suffer & die..........

I'm undecided about treatments, so I'll not jump into that debate. However, bees are insects NOT human or anything even close. Animals, farm product or pets, are NOT human. Physical pain can...
