  1. Re: Saw Lots of Drones On Inspection Today.....

I wouldn't be worried. In truth, I pretty much just look for capped brood. With all of those boxes, it is possible that you missed some eggs or larva (unless you took a few hours to go through them...

    Re: Reusing frames

I mostly just drop them in the hive to let them clean 'em up.

But, if you can't stand the risk, you can drop them in a bucket of lye (just push them in and pull them out, no need to let them sit))...

Re: They swarmed, now what are my options?

In my opinion, the queen your hive raised will be far superior to any queen you purchase.

Re: good idea for laying worker hive?

The 'shake method' may work for some folks, but I've never seen it work. I think those laying workers fly more than folks think they do.

Regardless, I deal with this issue by combining the hive...

    Re: Virgin queen flew off

I've had countless queen fly off on me after I mark them (and a few just before I mark them...). So far, I've never had a problem with them coming back.

Probably just jinxed myself, but there you...
  6. Re: Swarm stragglers - do you ever go back for them?

Some folks on these boards deal with absconding bees, so my tactics are probably ill advised in those areas where swarms tend to do that.

For me, I don't lose the stragglers because I hive the...
  7. Re: 2 New Hives, 7 Week Progress and Questions

    1. Hive build up varies - some fast, some slower (for various reasons). Since I keep a lot of hives in your area, I am concerned by the number of boxes you've dropped on them. I am not trying to be...
  8. Re: Do you use smoke everytime and does it set them back?

For most of my hives, I don't use smoke until we get past the main flow. I use smoke on every hive once we hit the hot summer.

I went through 19 hives (some were overwintered Nucs) this last...
  9. Re: Overwintered Nuc vs. A Small Colony - Is there a difference?

In my situation (i.e. I do not believe in requeening in the way that it is recommended, so most of my hives come out of Winter with queens entering their 2nd, 3rd and (in rare instances) 4th year), I...

    Re: Splitting Hives

Drone comb is not enough for me to feel good about doing my first splits. From capped to mating for a drone can be longer that it takes a hive to raise a queen and have her go on the maiden flights....

Re: Queen given to laying workers

I had a hive swarm on me (actually, I've had quite a few do that to me this year), with me arriving a day or two late. With several queen cells available, so I took a few cells for Nucs and then...

    Re: Foundation in the Cold

As an update, at the time of the initiation of this thread, I had several dozen supers (of all sizes) filled with foundation in my pole shed. They were all inspected and then used over the past 3...

    Re: 45 degrees and flying?

Some bees (I think it has to do with the genetics) fly in the 30's. I've never seen any of mine fly in the 20's, but many in the upper 30's. When it happens, you'll see a bunch of hives with no...

    Re: Question about a split

The foragers will go back to the original LOCATION. If the parent hive is in that location, that's where they'll go. If you move the parent hive and put the Nuc back at the original location,...

Re: Nicot - Frame for Larva/Queen Cells

Thanks. So, I have a second question!

How did you setup the box in the holder frame? I had pulled a drawn deep frame from my inventory and was going to cut a hole to put it in, but then I saw a...

    Re: save my bees--me too

Normally, I give the bees every chance to supercede her.

Given your location, I am not sure (don't you guys deal with a lot of AHB, making open breeding a problem?)

In my area, I have a couple...

Re: Honey from a divided hive?

Depends on when you yank the frames or 'do your split'.
  19. Re: looked like a maggot when I took off mouse guard, what was it?

    I'd say wax moth.

No big deal. Don't 'take action' unless your bees have a problem. A strong hive will keep them in check.

Once you get a good day, pull all of the frames. Hiding beneath a...

Sounds like a failing queen to me. Is the brood really spotty with lots of holes and only taking up a small bit of space?

Re: Transfering nucs into larger boxes...how to?

I'm just to the North of you. Had drones walking on the comb on Feb 17 (just a few per hive and not all hives.) This last Thur, I had enough drones to fill a Nuc in one hive. You can definitely...

Re: "No Treatment of Honey Bees Report" by StevenG

It would be interesting to know how well your walk away's do vs your purchased queens. It's too early to draw any conclusions, but it would still be interesting.
