Spotty brood pattern VS hatched cells?

One thing I've never quite got clarified is how to tell the difference between a "spotty" or weak brood pattern, and one where a bunch of bees have recently hatched out, giving it a similar "spotty"...

Re: can someone explain to me this hive

What's the logic with letting them get that large though? Why not extract honey as you go and leave at most 2 or 3 supers on top?
  5. How far away from bee yard to place bait hive?

Is there a recommended distance away from a beeyard for placing a swarm trap/bait hive?

Maybe it's fine to place the trap right near hives, but I wonder if it could potentially encourage your bees...

Bees like sugar more than honey?

My two hives still have a decent amount of stores, but I decided to add a bit of dry sugar mountain top style just in case I couldn't check weights for a couple months... Had a chance to look at them...

When can I do another sugar roll?

I decided to not treat my two hives for varroa before wintering ... largely because I was conflicted about it (being a first year beekeeper) and also because I did a sugar roll in the fall and the...

    Re: Hive Stands?

One use of those "stands" that contain the ramps is if you have a problem with skunks (or similar pests) ... the ramp provides a good place to hammer some nails from the bottom up, creating a spike...

    Re: First sugar roll...

They are most certainly not TF stock - I bought New Zealand packages (which I've regretted a touch since learning about better, local varieties). The queens are both good though, they were never...

    First sugar roll...

It's my first year with 2 (brand new) hives, both have built up nicely and are strong. I've decided to try treatment-free from the get-go (yes I know there are a ton of naysayers that say people...

To wrap or not to wrap?

I'd like to take a "poll" here to see what the general consensus is around wrapping hives for overwintering purposes. So, a couple questions:

    1) Do you wrap your hives?

    2) What winter...

Dry sugar on wintering inner cover?

For emergency stores (throughout the upcoming winter), can I just throw some dry sugar "in" the inner covers I have on my hives?

  15. Re: Will bees reach second honey super in winter?

    Thanks.

Yeah I have been feeding (albeit a bit sparingly so far), but might amp that up now for the fall season. I wasn't really sure what sort of "fall flow" we had in our area and didn't want...
  16. Will bees reach second honey super in winter?

I have a question about winter stores. I'm planning on wintering my hives with a 4 medium box configuration. It looks to me like the brood nest has shrunk for the most part to the second box, and...

Re: Never Treated Before- Asking Advice

Sounds to me like your single deep hive is a bit small/weak to have a hope of making it through the winter. I'd consider combining them ... and i wouldn't treat unless u know there's a problem.

That method gets mentioned on the forums now and then. In reality, it's no different really than running hives with all mediums (for example) with no queen excluders, and the downside is all the...

  24. Re: Hive body count reduction for wintering ... question!

There are a ton of bees in the bottom boxes, covering most of the frames, just no brood or honey stores. There is indeed pollen in there, although not a ton. I've had the "sticky" boards in since I...
  25. Re: Hive body count reduction for wintering ... question!

Actually your assumption is not correct! I do have screened bottom boards but have had them covered the entire time.
