    Re: update: Borage

They are photos taken with my gs4, then I use the google+ photos editor "hdr scape" feature. It allows you to adjust the dynamic range with a slider.

I adjust landscapes just enough to get them to...

    Re: Plant ID

Looks to be some type of chickpea or garbanzo bean type of plant.
  3. Re: Extra frame with queen cells for queenless hive?

    Update:

I was going to combine all my hives last week, but life (i.e. - work) got in the way and I never had a chance. I checked the queenless hive on Saturday morning so that I could prepare to...
  4. Re: Extra frame with queen cells for queenless hive?

I mean, the hive had no worker eggs or larvae or capped brood; Not the queen cups in particular.
  5. Re: Extra frame with queen cells for queenless hive?

So, I just checked on these hives.

First hive (that made all the queen cells) is still queenless and has about 5 lbs of bees (and a ton of pollen). The swarm has a drone layer and half a frame of...

    Re: update: Borage

That's about the only way to get good photos of borage being worked by bees. The flowers hang down quite a bit, so the bees are forced to work upside down.

And thanks for the comments... Took...

Bees are hitting my Borage weed patch pretty good now.

  8. Re: Extra frame with queen cells for queenless hive?

They were cups (3-4) on the bottom of one newly drawn comb; foundationless, so they were on the tip of the comb. This is where the bees were all clustered, but there was only a softball size group....
  9. Re: Extra frame with queen cells for queenless hive?

So, how do they supercede if they have no eggs to raise a queen from?
  10. Re: Extra frame with queen cells for queenless hive?

I hived them on 5/17 and checked them quick on 5/24 to make sure they were building straight comb and if they were laying... No eggs. They weren't building weird, so I left them for 2 weeks. I...
  11. Re: Extra frame with queen cells for queenless hive?

    Update today:

The first hive (with all the capped queen cells) has just a bunch of empty queen cells that look all chewed up and torn down. I did not see any queens running around, but I did here...
  12. Extra frame with queen cells for queenless hive?

I checked my two hives today; both packaged 5 weeks ago. Two weeks ago they were both healthy and had 5ish frames of brood/eggs each. Well, now they are both queenless!

    One hive had four separate...

    Re: making screened bottom boards

I make screened bottom boards out 2x4's using this method: http://www.myoldtools.com/Bees/bottomboard/bottomboard.htm

I use scrap 1x's to make the landing, back pieces and entrance reducer. I use...

    Re: Cheap top feeder

Your bees must be smarter... I have the troughs filled with marbles and still get the odd dead one here and there. Without marbles, I had 20-30 in the first day... So I added the marbles.

    Re: Cheap top feeder

Well, I certainly had something tip mine over four nights in a row last year... I think it was coons, because once they get a taste of something they like, there's nothing that will keep them out.

    Re: Cheap top feeder

I agree, the paint cans would be easier to set up and simply replace with a new filled one, but they are too tall (7 3/4" I believe) to fit inside a medium super. I need to have my feeders enclosed...

I haven't tried yet, but my measurement of the container says it will fit across the narrow side (perpendicular to frames) and it will leave the hole in the inner cover free. I should be able to...

    Re: Cheap top feeder

Make sure you cut the wooden inserts to slightly more than the depth of the container. This allows the bees to drink all the way to the bottom.

    Cheap top feeder

I was thinking about feeders lately... Waiting on bees to show up.

I have used chicken waterers inside an empty deep with success, but I have way more medium supers than deeps. Also, I hate...
