Re: Bees in my outside walls

No, it could lure bees away from the hive at night.

Re: Bees in my outside walls

That kind of hive is OK but only a small number of hives are made this way cos they don't make as much honey as a langstroth design hive. However many people who have this kind of hive really like...

Re: Bees in my outside walls

OK well a lot of places have seasons. There is a season when the bees store honey and another season when they don't get much and they have to eat what they saved up when things were good.

    So you...

By local guy you mean indigenous person? If so they may hunt and harvest by the moon and that may apply to indigenous bees but not your ones that are introduced.

    The indigenous people in my...

    Re: Varroa Bomb?

You are right to be concerned, nucs should continue raising brood alongside the bigger ones as they especially need a decent quotient of bees going into winter.
What can stop a nuc making brood...

Re: Newbees, Mediums and AFB -- a cautionary tale

    Don't disagree.

However much agriculture works that way be it bees beef or apples, the importing country does not import from a country that has diseases the importing country does not have if...

Re: Newbees, Mediums and AFB -- a cautionary tale

    It's a world conspiracy. ;)

No really, it's about pests and genetics and NZ not having stuff that Canada does not want. Other countries likely have stuff the Canadians would like but they are...

Re: Our understanding of genetics is changing

    Too simplistic.

Does not take into account what actually happens in the real world.

A beekeeper is able to choose which queens he breeds from & their genetics is 1/2 the equation.

    So to...
  10. Re: New solution for AFB and verroa mites?????

The other issue being it kind of assumes all bees are suffering an iron deficiency, and if they get enough iron they will not have a varroa problem.

Re: Bees in my outside walls

The honey is mostly near the top of the nest, and the brood is mostly nearer the bottom.

    Re: Varroa Bomb?

Didn't see the presentation but it's maybe a fair rule of thumb, maybe not.

Some other things should be considered, such as what can be seen of a natural mite fall on a board should only be taken...

Re: Considering switching to Oxalic Acid

Any tips about how to do it effectively for hives with brood?

IE, do you use a series of treatments, etc.

Re: Considering switching to Oxalic Acid

Drone brood is mostly in the hives during main brood rearing season so would be interested if you could further expand on that in terms of any tips about using OAV effectively for treating hives with...

    Re: Varroa Bomb?

    Yes, what Snl said.

Other thing that can happen and I have seen this, is a nearby apiary could have lost some hives to mites. Your bees do some robbing of the near dead hives and bring a whole...

Re: Newbees, Mediums and AFB -- a cautionary tale

Do we know that when an AFB spore is passed through the digestive system of a wax moth, the spore is destroyed?
  21. Re: Honey super storage and being treatment free?

    What Squarepeg said.

Also, wax moths are only much of a problem if there has been brood in the combs so they are dark, or if they have pollen. So if the supers have been over an excluder and are...
  22. Re: Ongoing Conversion to mediums... have question.... and Early Autumn report

  23. Re: To feed or not to feed [that is the question and a couple more]

Don't worry you are not the only one to do this. For some reason LOTS of beekeepers decide to requeen their queenless hive, just before the new queen the bees raised has had time to mate and start...
  24. Re: To feed or not to feed [that is the question and a couple more]

Introducing brood combs without extra bees is no problem. But if they come with a lot of bees the queen should be kept confined till a couple days after the extra bees have been put in & they have...
