    Re: Drone Exodus

I wasn't implying drones are the only ones that spread Varroa, just that they can end up miles and miles away in other hives which helps disseminate mites.

    Re: Drone Exodus

You just realized drones spread varroa? They hive hop very well too, but just because some hives evict drones doesn't mean they all do and sone hives carry drones all winter.

Are they robbing each other or is it an outside source of bees.
  5. Re: pollen substitute from a commercial stand point

He's probably busy shipping semi loads out still but I could be wrong.
  6. Re: Main Nectar Flow Clues in Northern California/Sacramento Area

I got a box of capped honey on any full size hive, had to feed anything under 10 frames but the bees look good. Urban hives in Elk Grove put up a deep and three mediums for the year each.

Beekeeping can be done on the cheap according to some, but if you get hooked.....

Biggraham, that's not a honey bee. I would suspect acute paralysis in those black bees but you never know.

Re: Catching swarm as it leaves the hive video

a little dated now, but still a great series to watch.
  12. Re: Local absence and local extinction, a confounding factor in TF prescriptions

    Cool deal Square,

Pm me where you're getting the test done, I'd like to look into it some day, not to say mDNA says much about the bee in general other than it's maternal parent but it's...
  13. Re: Local absence and local extinction, a confounding factor in TF prescriptions

I don't see why people get so focused on one method or another. All hives are different, hives change over time. If you're trying to expand, you can't afford just letting hives go. Beekeeping is...
  14. Re: Drawing Comb - recycling cappings into hive.

Bees don't recycle wax in that way very much from what I've seen. I do see them collecting it time to time but typically, 99% of it goes unused or they'll just toss it out the hive.
  15. Re: Cut Out Bees: Abscond while box open waiting for latecomers?

When you get most of them in there, just put an inner cover on top, works fine for me with swarms, keeps the hive mostly closed but the bees can still fan etc..

    Re: Recurring cross-comb

Cross comb is usually due to a spacing issue or the bees do it to build drone comb. If you do 9 frame spacing, better to get frames drawn then space them out, they'll widen them due to a flow as...

Re: Anyone else keepng a log book?

I don't take notes, I could pick out each queen in a line up from my 26 hives or so and tell you which one she belonged too, but if I did keep notes, dates of queen emergence or time when I made...

Re: Another Hive has absconded due to shb

Part of me suspects a reduced entrance to the smallest opening in Florida full sun has to do with the abscond as well.

I always cut myself with a standard tool when I keep it in my tool pouch. The jhook is more predictable on where the sharp end is, but it's not as good for scraping with the sharpened main edge...
