Re: Hive Getting Full, but not organized

They are from a package - but I only fed on install. They shouldn't really need feeding past May or June in this part of the country. Also if you keep feeding, you may find them storing syrup in...
  3. Got called to a swarm / queenless and angry

I got called to a mall for a swarm that had clustered on the rear security camera of a department store. It's been raining for days and while the original swarm had been around volleyball sized,...

Hive Getting Full, but not organized

My topbar hive is getting pretty packed - I was away for three weeks and came home to find them super packed in on 20 bars and my hive is 28 bars wide. I gave them 4 more and made sure there were no...
  5. Moved down when I wasn't looking, nadired!

Last year I couldn't get downward motion, but this year, I have a full set of boxes!

I can't link the pic for some reason - but blog!

    Pictures!

That's 6 weeks of work give or take? Very...
  6. Re: Nuc with Queen Cells - What I've Done So Far - Am I on the Right track?

After 5 hours, the new nuc (which had the queen) was full and quiet and had lots of comings and goings and both the new hive and the original nuc were whirring and there were bees swirling around...
  7. Nuc with Queen Cells - What I've Done So Far - Am I on the Right track?

So I popped open a nuc I got a few days ago and it was PACKED full. When I pulled it apart to check on it before hiving it, I found 6 queen cells, 3 open, 3 sealed.

So I shook the loose bees...

Re: Spotted eggs in my weak hive!

Half asleep and reading beesource= I thought you had spotted eggs (as in eggs with spots) in your hive. What kind of queen lays spotted eggs? Gotta get me one of those!

Re: I have made a mess of my TBH

When I inspect my tbh, I take a few empty bars from behind the divider out, slide the divider back, and then inspect it like a filing cabinet. Look down between the two bars, slide the next bar over,...

    Re: Weird sting reaction?

Super bizarre. It was almost gone yesterday and today it's totally back to normal.

    Re: Weird sting reaction?

I'd never been stung before, it was easy to remember. :) I don't really take meds for anything if I can help it. Spoonful of local honey in my morning tea is the closest to meds I get, generally.

    Re: Weird sting reaction?

Oh also, I got stung on Wednesday 3-4 times on the thigh and those reacted like I thought they "should" a little red, a little swollen, a little itchy....

    Weird sting reaction?

This is my second season keeping bees and I got stung for the first time since i waa a child last Saturday...in the middle finger knuckle of my left hand. I had literally no reaction to it, no...

    Re: Too soon to split?

They have 5 full and 2 partial combs of mixed brood and 3 full and 3 partial of honey/nectar. Sounds like I should give them a little longer, I just don't want to wait too long if I'm going to do it....

    Too soon to split?

So rather than try to complete the disastrous plastic frame crop and chop...ugh...I've decided to go foundationless Lang with that nuc, but now I've got an empty TBH. My other TBH will be a month old...
  16. Re: Tried to help out a farmer I know...but I don't keep Lang and she REALLY messed u

Oh I was definitely saying that I'm the one needing patience. I'm definitely not trying to take advantage of anything, just trying to get these bees back on the good foot....or wing, rather. ;)

Re: Swarm clustered INSIDE a car

    That's insane!

We had this happen in boston: https://mobile.twitter.com/OFFtheDOT/status/331495371106820096/photo/1

Which I thought was bees in an open trunk...but was just A LOT OF BEES on...
  18. Re: Tried to help out a farmer I know...but I don't keep Lang and she REALLY messed u

Went out today to more properly combine the hives- removed the roof, top box, found the paper pretty thoroughly eaten and then went to do what I'd come to do (move the honey blockade out, move all...
  19. Re: Tried to help out a farmer I know...but I don't keep Lang and she REALLY messed u

She has expressed to me that she pretty literally doesn't care, she just knows that she needs bees because she's a farmer. She told me to do whatever I thought best and she'd stay out of my way.
  20. Re: I messed up really badly...and would love some feedback.

I think I found the best solution possible that solves my issue and a local bee-inept farmer's issue. I posted about what was going on with her in this thread:

  21. Re: Tried to help out a farmer I know...but I don't keep Lang and she REALLY messed u

Ok, so after a ridiculous text conversation with her, which I wish I could post because it's so passive and bizarre....I told her the issues and suggested fixes, she said "woah, I wish I'd been...
  22. Re: Tried to help out a farmer I know...but I don't keep Lang and she REALLY messed u

I did, I thought better of it later, but haven't been out there. Is leaving the top entrance on ok, or should I just put the roof back without the inner cover too?

DSW is a shoe store, they have...
  23. Re: Tried to help out a farmer I know...but I don't keep Lang and she REALLY messed u

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure she does.

The farm is on land that is a small cluster of farms, and driving through to get to hers you go right by some guy's be yard with 3-4 bustling langs, 2-3...
  24. Re: I messed up really badly...and would love some feedback.

The brood frame I gave them was only sealed in the middle, the sides were all open young larva. It was the newest brood frame in the nuc, I was working backwards, I guess.

I got it from a woman...
  25. Re: I messed up really badly...and would love some feedback.

Do you think what I put in the big hive will raise a queen or do you think I didn't get enough in there? It's two shaken frames, some nectar, and some mixed open and covered brood....
