    Re: roof over hive entrance

Yes. Many times, when building various hives, I have both; sloped the porch a little so the water would run off, and I have built many porch roofs over entrances. The bees know how to find their...

    Re: Smoker fuel?

The trick is to not only have something that lasts, and that burns good, but something that produces cool clean smoke. You don't want heat; just smoke.
Dry, punky, rotten wood that can crumble in...
  5. Re: Swarm leaving when there are no queen cells?

It seems sometimes the cells aren't constructed until after the swarm takes place. Did you say there were still fresh eggs? If so, the remaining bees can still make cells. Time will tell of course.

    Re: WORTH EVERY PENNY!

frysl; you must talk nicer to your bees. :) Sweet talk them a little bit. let them know just how wonderful you are, and how you plan on making their lives happy . . . before you steal all their...

    Re: Three swarms, one location!

I think, DR Beers, that you are being very resourceful. Use what you can until you get where you want to be. You did good.
  8. Re: trapout what to do with all the queen cells

You did fine. You would only need a few frames (2 or 3) of bees to start another hive, but be careful in handling the queen cells. Keep them in the up-right position like they were in the hive, and...

    Re: Whats going on?

I agree. Take the frame with the queen, and another frame of bees from the original nuc, and place her and the other frame, with some new frames, in another nuc.
Keep a couple of frames with...

    Re: Too many Drones??

I have had far too many drones in a hive before, and they eat a lot of the stores; depleting the hive.
I found a hive this way after the drones hatched out. Since I could not find the queen, and...

Re: New family in the neighborhood.

DanielD; Sounds like you might need to keep a trap there every year.

There are some areas where I get swarm calls every year, so I know there has got to be a very nice casting hive around those...

    New family in the neighborhood.

Even after years of watching, studying, learning, and experimenting to gain more insight into honeybees, I still find it very exciting when a nice swarm moves into a manmade swarm trap. Had one move...

    Re: Should I remove stores?

If your hive is full of bees, and you have that much honey, with no space to grow, and the flow is on, you have to do something. Either pull the honey, add space, or split the hive. Vance G. is...

You're so right. It is addictive. :applause:

It depends on if the Medium Super is the only stores they have. If all you have is the Brood Box and that one Medium Super, then no, I would not...

Re: Heated honey BAD for you?

Absolutely not. I can't believe people put this kind of stuff out there. I would need to review the evidenced based studies on a claim like this, but I don't know all there is to know either, and I...

Thank you for this good information. I do realize, as well as the responses from others as they seem to agree, that the chances are very slim that a hive of pure black Bees could...

Re: How To Get Drawn Comb?

If you can connect with a local bee club, there may be some fellow beekeepers that can provide you a few frames of drawn comb. Otherwise, you may be able to start collecting it over time.

Re: German Black Bees; any left in the USA?

That is what I have been thinking. Yet, I still don't have an answer as to whether or not anyone has proven the current existence of the European Black Bee in the US. I get the idea that some...
