    Re: garden pollination?

Same here. I would suggest your friend buy some mason bees. They rarely sting and tend to pollinate closer to home (your garden).
  2. Re: beetle blaster vs beetle jail. which is better at catching shb's?

If you don't use oil, how do the beetles drown or die? Are you just baiting the center and not the two large chambers on the sides?
  3. Re: beetle blaster vs beetle jail. which is better at catching shb's?

On the Jails, it looks like the bait goes in the center part. What do you bait yours with? If I order some, do they come with directions? Like how much oil to put in? Is there a fill line marked,...

explain these honey/wax filters to me

    15978

I have yet to harvest but I'll be crushing and straining this spring (all my frames are foundation-less). I get that the 200 micron is fine and the 600 is coarse and the 400 is somewhere in...

Re: Kelley's vs Dadant copper outer covers

I'm a big fan of DIY stuff so good for you. My dad offered to buy those copper tops for me, otherwise I'd have never shelled out that kind of money for an outer cover. When it gets warm I'm going to...
  6. beetle blaster vs beetle jail. which is better at catching shb's?

I see that the beetle jail clips on to the frame. I like that. It's also reusable (although I've heard some folks spray out the BB too for reuse). The jail is twice as expensive. But what I care...

Re: shb larva on Feb 1st

That's interesting. I did find it on the landing board by the entrance but I didn't see it actually come out of the entrance. And I have trees hanging over the hives.

Here's the hive it crawled out of just 24 hours earlier.

Re: shb larva on Feb 1st

I'm definitely going thru the hives the next warm day. I want to check honey stores too. I have not used beetle traps yet but that is on my To Do List for 2015. I plan on putting 1 FGMO filled Beetle...

    shb larva on Feb 1st

I just found a SHB larva crawling out of the hive entrance. I've seen SHB's during summer inspections but this is the first time I've seen their larva. 24 hours ago it was 50 degrees and the girls...

    Re: Bee question...

With the exception of white clover, "my" honey bees mostly ignore what's planted in my yard (fruit trees, garden, flowers) so for pollination insurance I provide nesting blocks for native bees and...

    Re: Cleansing flight safe distance

I wish I knew more about cleansing flights too. My only concern is them pooping in the water sources that I provide. Because the way my apiary is setup, because of a tall fence and tree line, they...

Re: are swarm traps part of swarm mangement?

On not cutting queen cells, I've heard stories of beeks cutting the cells to prevent swarming but the bees swarm anyway and now they're queen-less because you've removed the cells. As for selling...

Re: are swarm traps part of swarm mangement?

All good advice except that I'm not interested in making increases. In my original post I said, "I don't want/can't afford any more colonies". I'm just a backyard hobbyist. The bees might be free...
  17. Re: Is Apple cider vinegar necessary to attract SHB into a Beetle Blaster?

Thanks Apis. As a treatment free beek, I want to disturb the delicate hive ecology and microbes in the bees' gut as little as possible. I wonder if the vinegar and FGMO will have any adverse effects...

are swarm traps part of swarm mangement?

They say that part of being a responsible beekeeper is swarm management, especially if you live in a neighborhood (which I do). So I have some questions because this is my second year. I'm hoping...
  19. Is Apple cider vinegar necessary to attract SHB into a Beetle Blaster?

Is Apple cider vinegar necessary to attract SHB into a Beetle Blaster filled with Food Grade Mineral Oil or will the bees just herd them in there?

I thought this was great. The point he makes at the 41 min mark is totally me.

    Re: Best Comb Honey Book?

I'll sell you my brand new, unopened book, Honey in the Comb by Carl Everest Killion, for $13 plus shipping. I think I paid $18. I bought it by mistake. I don't like comb or chunk honey.

How long will fondant last in fridge?

I made too much I guess. I thought the girls would take it quicker. If it's in the fridge, uncovered, will it expire?

    Re: Honey leaking from hive...?

I think you're right. Because I even tasted the stuff leaking out and it didn't taste like honey but did look like it. I love Bee Source!

    Re: Honey leaking from hive...?

I experienced the exact same thing and I don't have candy in it so I'd rule that out. It concerned me enough to where I did a full inspection in 50 degree weather. I could not find the reason. But it...
