    Re: Piping Queen

I once put a ripe cell in an observation hive, didn`t see her emerge but I heard her piping through the glass, also was able to see her walking around with a mating sign.........Pete N3SKI

perfect. I would make it more narrow it don`t have to bee that wide, most times swarm cells are close together , Pete ,,N3SKI
  7. Re: Transporting Queen Cells and Making Splits - Advanced Advice Needed

cut a piece of wire cloth 3 1/2 x 3 inches, then cut the 3/4 x 3/4 inch corners out, then fold it. it helps to remove the first wire around the outside so that it is easier to push into the comb....
  8. Re: Transporting Queen Cells and Making Splits - Advanced Advice Needed

I do as Saltybee said, make little 5 sided boxes out of #8 screen 1 1/2 x 2 x 3/4 inches, pushed all the way down to the foundation. They will dig under if you don`t. If you want to cut them out...

    Re: Genetics and feed.

My thinking is that there is a minimal size to a cluster that can contend with the cold. My observations indicate that a cluster in a 5 frame or even a 4 frame nuc is not only adequate but well into...

Re: How to clean up a deadout?

I kind of had the same thing last week. I noticed my strongest nuc from last year wasn`t flying. I popped the top and there sitting on the sugar was the marked Queen, all but a few bees were dead. I...
  14. Re: Capped brood problems! Something's not right!

Thats true Moots, but when it gets too strong you gotta do something or it will swarm, which might even be neat to see that happening, drawing cells and queens fighting. Its ok pulling the frames out...
  15. Re: Capped brood problems! Something's not right!

Yes it is , when you get 3 frames capped and emerging , you better get two out of there, put them in a nuc with a ripe cell, give them 2 empties. They are not too good at drawing frames though. give...
  16. Re: Capped brood problems! Something's not right!

Mine is out of honey, have to replace that today, top frame .I made two doors split at frame 4. It is a 8 framer also. There is about 1 1/2 = 2 bee space to the glass not much room to heat up and...

    Re: Temperature for brood

I have 2 cutouts to do also. I`m going to wait till I see drones flying, in case I kill or don`t get the queen.I`ll have a chance to replace her. Pete N3SKI
  18. Re: Capped brood problems! Something's not right!

Try useing half inch styrofoam covers that go right against the glass, mine is in an unheated garage, she started laying jan 19. My guess is they were warm enough at the time she layed and they...

Re: What did you learn this winter?
