    Re: Queenless hive???

Sure you can do it that way but you can some time have more than one laying worker. I would give each split a frame of eggs for at least 3 weeks or until you see a queen cell!!

    Re: paint stripper

The paint is on the outside of the box and paint stripper should be ok to use and should not harm the bees. If that is your preference to refinish the boxes then go for it!!

Re: killed bees using landscape straw?

I use straw all the time in my smoker and have had no problems. Think I would look for some other issue as to why you lost them!!

    Re: Reversing hive bodies

If you have brood and the queen in the super then yes you should move it to the bottom and put the two deeps on the top!

Re: Honey Not Quite Ready to Harvest

Bees will not cap cells that are not full. Doesn't mean it is not cured or the right moisture! Think I read this somewhere.

    Re: Thymol & mites

I am also thinking about using a cup of this mixture and soaking paper towels in a zip lock bag then put the paper towels under the inner cover for a lingering effect. The bees will eventually chew...

I would go with Cypress for longevity!!

Sounds like you may have a laying worker. If you have nothing but drone brood that is what you have!!

    Re: Sour smell in beeyard

Same thing happened about 20 years ago with my first hive. Had no idea what what it was and called the only other beekeeper I knew and thats what he told me also. Goldenrod is probably what it is!!
  19. Re: Pulling supers - how long can I wait to extract honey?

Once honey cools of it can be harder to extract? I try to extract the same day I pull supers!
  20. Re: Missouri Bees from a Walnut Tree, turned into log hive

It would be best to set it on end in the original position as bees draw cells in a slightly upward position otherwise they might abscond. good luck!!

Re: How to go back to 10 frames from 9.

I start with 10 then reduced to 9 with no problem!
  22. Re: Queen excluder to force them to draw comb?

Put the super on the bottom and the deep on the top and they should move up and draw it out. After they draw it out you can reverse them and put the super on top!!

    Re: Shallow Supers?

The only benefit I know of would be is if you already have shallow frames! Otherwise I would go with the medium supers!!

For the best price and a good suite go to pestmall.com
  25. Re: 5 hives, all putting comb where it causes real problems.

If it is a standard hive you should be staring with 10 frames with the frames touching each other. If you want to later reduce to 9 frames after they are drawn out there should be no problem!!
