  1. Re: How long do most neew beekeepers keep at it?

From a historical perspective, beekeeping popularity goes in spurts. We are currently in an uptick. This too will pass.

If everyone that started beekeeping had stayed in it, we would have a heck...

    Re: Crazy or Cool beek?

Since he had bees in his beehives, not ants or wasps, and did not try to shoot you with a spoon, I would class him as sane and since he probably has money to spare, eccentric.

Re: terrible swarming issues in midwest??

Tony - maybe us old Wisconsin beekeepers have adapted to the conditions here and have few swarming problems.

Our queens from last year and the year before a just now starting to be superceded, at...

And there you have it boys and girls. Cyanide is the best way to kill. Now if you can only find some in a can that is NOT too rusty.

Re: terrible swarming issues in midwest??

I suspect that despite our best efforts, the swarmy African genes have infiltrated the queen breeding world. Those that stay north get them cleansed every winter, but those snow birds down south are...
  7. Re: The difference between retarded and brilliant?

It appears that the difference between retarded and brilliant is precisely the same as between crazy and eccentric..... a large stack of money.

Well Adrian, since you are about as west as you can get, and I am by the big puddle, you must be right.

Re: Is CO2 the best way to kill a hive?

The OP asked what the best way to kill a HIVE was. Mr. Lyon and I both suggested cyanide. That is what was used before sulfa and terramycin where available. The next step was to burn the hive. If the...

No, not really, but we rarely have issues with swarming.

  12. Re: How hard is it on a hive to make the migration to California from the east coast?

I realize that this is a tangent, but the most reliable out of state package supplier brought his packages in, and stored them in, a reefer. The bees where alot less stressed than those not doing...

We currently use a gifted John Deere blower. Just for grins, I dug out the first prototype blower, pictured in ABJ in 1965?, and got it running. WOW! Modern blowers are wimps. Obvious difference in...

Re: RPM Requirements for a Honey Extractor

What HP are you looking to use? I believe KEP has a 110 in, 220 3 phase out inverter that is fairly cheap.

Do it right and do it once.

    Yes, 30 g's sounds right.

Re: RPM Requirements for a Honey Extractor

Off the top off my head, I am building a 90 frame extractor with about a 65" reel, that will spin 180 RPM max.

The real test is too spin until they explode, and back off 25 percent.
