    Re: Free bee flower seeds

sounds like a public relations scam.
  3. Re: Strange Hive... and I'm not really a newbee

roll or shake to get a mite count. unfortunatly the dusting is not effective to the point of being about a waste of time.

    Re: Bees "Bearding"

a bunch of bearding posts is normal for this time of year. the same for" my bees left why" in the spring.
  5. Re: Strange Hive... and I'm not really a newbee

it could also be they prefer something that your other hives do not like.
  6. Re: Newbee question- Putting second brood chamber (deep) today

sounds ok. as long as the bees do not get overcrowded and deciede to swarm you are ok. sometimes bees do not want to cross the space to the next box. if you put the next box under they have to cross...

    Re: Bees "Bearding"

do your bees have a water source? i am real negative toward entrance type feeders, it leads to robing. off set your supers for a more open hive when it is hot. some bearding is normal when it gets...
  10. Re: Anyone feed dry sub through the top cover?

a spoonfull or two is not enough to make any difference. the patties are less likely to get thrown out the front door by the housekeeping staff... but hey it is your money.

    Re: Installed Nucs Starting Slowly?

be patient todd, your nuc is off to a slow start and you have figured out you started with a real low grade nuc. there is nothing wrong with plastic frames there are millions in use, yes the bees...
  12. Re: Newbee question- Putting second brood chamber (deep) today

that is what i would do. do not put the undrawn frames in the bottom side by side... colino's annswer is also valid.

    Re: Installed Nucs Starting Slowly?

unfortunatly keeping an eye out for mites is not enough. for a weak population hive, a sugar shake test is probably your best bet. see the ny bee wellnes or ontario bee association web sites for...

    Re: Installed Nucs Starting Slowly?

if the syrup is too sour they will leave it alone or go slow, it will not stop the bees. i know of commercial operators who dump syrup into open barrels of straw and do not clean it out more than...

    Re: Installed Nucs Starting Slowly?

if nothing else is going on you need different queens. not exactly the same but i have a weak overwintered hive that has only built up to 2 1/2 frames, they were weak since started last year, the...
  16. Re: How to stop bees from drinking pool water

try a bird bath with a couple of rocks in it. add a few drops of chlorox. for some reason bees like chlorine. it disipates quickly, so you may have to refresh daily till the bees give up on the pool....
  17. Re: just realized one hive has wrong outer cover.

ace and mark have good points, if you must put a hole in a hive body put it way it off to one side.
  18. Re: Cleaning the Propolis from the tops of feeder jars.

yes..after a good dose who cares about propolis.
  19. Re: how to tell if store sugar is from cane or beet

:applause: absolutely, especialy if it is labeled "natural' and sold in a farmers market in a nice urban area or on the internet... or more accurate yet, a health food store at the mall.

Re: Bees returning to the package

:shhhh:it means the bees never had beekeeping lessons and did not pay attention to the internet. do it again, they like the smell of the package. try a couple of drops of lemon grass oil on the top...
  23. Re: how to tell if store sugar is from cane or beet

it must be true if you read it on the internet... i read your original question and my instant response was "who cares"
  24. Re: Rookie - Big Difference in My 2 Hives

bees vary a lot hive to hive. be patient. if needed re-queen in mid summer. maybe offer feed to the weak one now.

Re: how fast will 1:1 syrup go bad ?

2 to 4% reconstituted lemon juice or a little bit of cider vinegar will do the same thing. as for the original question it depends on weather and how bacteria free the original syrup was. at 2 weeks...
