I have nine hives in my backyard in Cincinnati, OH. I had a tiny swarm today into a tree. The ball is smaller than a softball. I had a very weak queenless hive, which was robbed two weeks ago, so...

Thoughts on which hives get robbed

How long for new queen to start laying?

I had moved eggs into a queenless hive and they made queen cells. I checked on Friday and found the new queen. Based on the timing, she probably emerged last Tuesday. I checked the hive today for...

Re: Bees not making new queen

I thought if they start making a new queen cell for certain this time, I will destroy that queen cell and install a new queen. I am afraid to install a new queen now because they may just kill her.

Re: Bees not making new queen

I put just one frame in with eggs and I checked it thoroughly for queen cells. I made a note of exactly where the queen cell was a week before, but it was gone. If they do not make a new queen from...

    Bees not making new queen

One of my hives swarmed in later April. After about five weeks, I still saw no brood. I added a frame with eggs from another hive. After a week, they still had not started making a new queen. I...
  9. Tried to stop robbing for seven days, but the robbers come back

I have read on Bush's site how to stop robbing. I have tried putting a wet blanket over the hive for two days and blocking the entrance. As soon as I open the front, the robbers are back in a few...
  10. Re: Thoughts about keeping one full honey super on all winter

Those photos on my web site are about six years old. I don't use the bubble wrap method anymore. Sorry about the confusion.
  11. Re: Thoughts about keeping one full honey super on all winter

    Greg,

It is not bubble wrap insulation. I use rigid 3/4-inch urethane foam board with foil facing. I buy the 4x8 ft. sheets at Home Depot or Lowes.
  12. Re: Thoughts about keeping one full honey super on all winter

    Greg,

I make all my own woodware. I use two 1/4 dia hanger bolts on the front and two on the back of each box. I use 3/4" polyurethane rigid foam insulation with a foil facing. The slot below...
  13. Re: Thoughts about keeping one full honey super on all winter

My goal with the insulation and ventilation is to minimize condensation in the hive and resultant mold and other issues. That is why I decided to give them fresh water. I used a shallow plastic...
  14. Re: Thoughts about keeping one full honey super on all winter

Wayne, That makes sense about the queen excluder. I will probably just make sure there are more than enough full frames in the three medium brood chambers. I will have to find some high thermal...
  15. Thoughts about keeping one full honey super on all winter

I have 10 hives in my backyard. I normally leave much honey for them in my three medium brood chambers over winter so they eat honey instead of sugar water. Instead of extracting honey in late...

  20. Re: Time period from swarm to new queen emerging?

    Michael,

The old hive has not swarmed yet this year, so I am pretty sure there was not another queen in there laying. The eggs were still up on end like they were just laid and they were in a...
  21. Re: Time period from swarm to new queen emerging?

Michael, I found eggs in the hive, so a queen must have been in there within the past couple of days. I heard they shut the queen down for a while before they swam. Since I found eggs this...
  22. Time period from swarm to new queen emerging?

I just split one of my strong hives by moving frames of eggs and brood to a new hive and will let the bees make a new queen. When I was working on the old source hives, I accidentally damaged swarm...
