    Re: Honey Creamer

I use clear jars also. My favorite creamed honey doesn't flow though...unless you are talking days to weeks. What I strive for is creamed honey that you can effortlessly take a knife and cut out an...

    Re: Comb Containers

I use the hard cases. I sell mine for $12 and have sold out each year that I have sold them. I don't sell all that much (I sold 100 of them in 2014) but I like being able to stack them and adding...

    Re: Grapes and Bees

I have my hives within about 200' of my 200 wine grape vines up in Elmira, OR. The bees don't split the grapes, but if the grapes have powdery mildew one of the problems is that the grapes will...

    Re: Sideliner Profitability Study

One thing that would concern me is whether I could reliably get 70 queens by March 1. I don't think that the timing works without buying queens. Also, I've been raising my own queens since 2007...

    Re: Weather change. Dead bees

My view is that I hope to see a few dead bees out front hives. That means that someone is inside and they are trying to keep the hive clean. When I find a hive with no dead bees I start to wonder...

Re: Honey warming box air temperature

Mine cycles between 100-105 and a 5 gallon bucket is liquid in about 2 days. Sometimes sooner if it isn't too solid yet.

Re: 1 or two oz jars

We sold some honey to a bride and she went to Ikea and bought the jars. She filled her own. I saw a sample of one of them and they probably held 2oz.
  8. Re: Not feeding, why??? Low on stores, and not feeding.

When I see equal strength hives taking vastly different amount of feed, I suspect high nosema counts or queen issues. Sometimes it's neither, but most of the time it seems to be one or the other.

Re: Why a nuc instead of a full colony?

And to me this is a single or full size hive, not a nuc. Just a full size hive put in nuc boxes.

Re: Why a nuc instead of a full colony?

Good question! If I had my choice I would overwinter full sized hives, but the reality is that when I can make up the new "hives" there isn't time for them to get to full sized hives. But if you...

Poll: Re: Bees, lies and evidence-based policy

A troll is someone that comes on a site, makes a fantastic claim of fact and then watches the resulting action. Not someone who asks the troll for proof.
  12. Re: 30% overwintering losses...is that accurate?

The BIP results that I got this morning are national management results. The one that I got on September 30 was the monthly report on the western states (82 respondents). I believe that they...
  13. Re: 30% overwintering losses...is that accurate?

The BIP monthly surveys are only to see how other beekeepers manage hives each month. They don't deal with losses. That survey will come out April 1. I think that BIP's goal is to get enough...

Re: Moving from bottom to a top entrance

Every year or so I seem to have a hive or two that uses the venting that I give them over winter to start using top entrances. I don't understand the attraction of top entrances to beekeepers unless...
  16. Re: 30% overwintering losses...is that accurate?

If you have ever registered hives with the state, you will get a few requests for reports or surveys (honey and bees) from Bee Informed Partnership and the USDA. I now get a survey from BIP every...

Re: when honey is not honey

White cappings are not necessarily an indication of capped syrup. When we produce cut comb, we try to find the bees that leave a small air space between the cappings and honey. Those bees make...

    Re: What is raw honey?

No. I'm saying that those things don't exist in the cells with the raw honey. After extracting they are in the honey and can be strained out without changing the honey from being raw.

    Re: What is raw honey?

I grew up drinking raw milk 2-3 times a day (for 20 years or so). Back then it was normal around where I lived. We ran the milk through a cream separator and sold most of the cream to a local...

Re: how to kill hive of bees

I would shake the laying worker hive out and not put a box back in the place of their hive for a couple of days. They will move to other hives. Then put your nuc box in the laying worker hive...
  22. Re: Reoccurring robbing! How can I prevent it.

I don't feed weak hives in a dearth, especially with HBH. I feed my strong hives and move full capped frames to the weak hives. If the weak hives are actively being robbed, you will need to move...

    Re: Hive turned mean

In the pacific northwest our bees completely change their disposition in August. Next April your little angels will be back...even with the same queen.
  24. Re: Another New Original Never Before Tried Method For Cleaning Cutcomb Honey

Right now my bees would have uncapped every inch of that comb. Earlier in the year that might have worked.

Oh, I see thats in a hive over an excluder. That might work! I might need to try that.

Re: Wondering about TF and Colony Size

Which unfortunately for my area coincides with the end of our honey flow. So my overwintered 5 frame nuc's won't make much surplus unless I add brood and bees from strong overwintered hives.
