My hives have solid bottom boards. I think the entrance is too big, and will modify before adding more bees. I may try blocking the entrances for 3 -4 days.

I had a hive years ago. Unfortunately, I starved them to death. Last spring I set up 2 TBHs. One hive died, and the other absconded after about 10 days (I watched them go).
