    Re: Hive Beetle

I build my own design and so far had very good luck with them. Plans are on my website. Oil traps seem to work very well controlling beetles and ants and a few other things too. I have lost hives...
  2. Re: DO I need to treat first year package bees for mites?

I would do a sugar shake (powdered sugar in a jar with about a cup [300] of bees) and base my decision on the resulting mite count. I do not treat blindly. There has to be a reason.

    Re: Hives crashing, SHB?

SHB will take down a hive faster than anything else I have ever seen. I would not try to keep bees here without oil trays. Trays really work on the beetles and do a great job on the ants too. ...

    Re: Follower board

I add a little duct tape to keep it bee tight and we're good to go.

  5. Re: How can I make hive boxes that are perfectly stackable-a necessary requirement.

Are you assembling your boxes using a box jig? Michael Bush has a nice one on his site, http://bushfarms.com/bees.htm

    Re: New Bees

At first glance this seems reasonable...until I thought about it for a bit. All the classes and meetings and discussions and youtube videos in the world do not a beekeeper make. Getting your hands...

    Re: New Bees

Personally I see this as normal. New folks arrive, all excited. Some last. Most fade away. A couple years later something happens to pique interest in beekeeping again, and new folks jump in. ...

    Re: How Much Effort

I am SMALL potatoes but even I streamline--use jigs, staplers and the like to make it all go easier and faster. I gave up making frames one at a time after the first box! There's plans for a jig on...

    Re: Feeding nucs during dearth?

Since you are going to feed 2:1 anyhow, you can whip some MegaBee into it and it will stay suspended in the syrup. Like you I cannot feed pollen patties because of SHBs, so this is my bypass way of...
  11. Re: Can you usually keep more hives in a more urban area?

"Digest" as in break down and absorb the information contained therein.

Edited to add that I have been at this for over 20 years and I am NOWHERE NEAR Mark's level of expertise. If...
  12. Re: Can you usually keep more hives in a more urban area?

Most folks who make a living off their bees count their hives by the hundreds. Stationary urban beekeeping doesn't generally lend itself to that scope of beekeeping. I think you need to talk to a...

    Re: Observation Top Cover

I'm nosey too, so I use full-screened inner covers. That way the hive stays dark but I can pop the top at any time for a peek without really disturbing them and getting a face full of angry bees.

Re: Little beetles in top of hive

That may be true in Maryland, but that was NOT my experience in Florida. There I kept oil pans on every hive and kept them in full sun. Anything less and the beetles tried to take over. I suspect...

  17. Re: How to keep varroa at comfortable levels w/no chemicals????????

Re-queen with VSH queens. Sugar dust. Drone traps. Brood breaks. And read scientificbeekkeeping.com . The first step to dealing with an enemy is by KNOWING that enemy.

    Re: hive dimensions

Manufactured foundation won't work either. Are you planning to extract your honey or crush and strain? You'd have to build your own extractor too, if you want to extract. It can all be done, of...

    Re: New type of frame

Interesting concept. Have to disagree with your notions on SHBs though. Around here I don't care how strong the hive is, the beetles take a run at them. Too many nooks and crannies in this design....

    Re: Feeding pollen

Have you read Randy Oliver on the subject? If not, go HERE for some good information. He's conducting a study that may be helpful. He's also got a formula or two.
