Nice combination.

Nice combination.
I went and looked where you are located and I would assume you are nearing the end of splitting/swarm season? I would take a frame of brood with eggs from my strongest hives and apply one each to...
Same thing I do as I raise queens without grafting and find all the bees give a head start to the new hive.
Thanks DC for posting this, these are the plans I used for my 2 way pallets modification.
Give me another 30 years of playing with honey bees and I will be one Old Fart who has lived long enough to enjoyed my hobby and hopefully explore all the facets of amazement these little critters...

I take a piece of 2" Styrfoam cut to migratory top size and sit it on top of my current migratory top and use an old migratory top to keep it in place. No wrappings used. We do have extreme winters...
I prefer the W clip myself, running them on 2 hive migratory pallets.
I did get a chuckle concerning not knowing how to keep a smoker lit as being a reason not to smoke. Stove pellets will keep your smoker lit for hours, trust me.
Yes this is my third year beekeeping and I manage to keep them alive and thriving. :shhhh: As for creating the site the day was chosen randomly while I was recovering from fusion surgery, but I am...
I confess, I haven't used smoke on the bees since spring. I do weekly lid pop offs and other duties without the need. Yes I do have docile hives, semi-docile hives and vampire hives, once I leave the...
Another front ranger, welcome. :) We're over on the western slope in Grand Junction. Good luck with the bees.
Based on my observations and weighing a full deep frame of honey 8 lbs. pic is in my link. 10 frames only, full, weighed 80 lbs. I see from others posts the number can range somewhat due to how full...
I use a 3" opening built into my migratory pallets and a 3" opening built into my migratory tops for Langs. On my long Langs I have 4 bottom openings 1 3/4" with MannLake entrance reducers and 3"...
Thanks for the PM Steve, I wish you the best with this endeavor. I would love to place several hives on the Grand Mesa just to see how they fare. :D
Bear Creek Steve, The reason I asked is over here on the western slope winter runs upwards to 6 months or more at that elevation providing no forage to speak of, but when it isn't winter there is...
Thanks, Michael
I'm assuming you are moving them down mountain during the winter?
Mike,
These look like the nucs I convert 10 frames deeps into. I'm curious for overwintering purposes how many total are you using? Brood box with one, two supers? Which in my case I would use...
I'm running 9 frames in my 10 frame deeps with the intent of phasing out deeps for double long Langs. I use 10 frame super mediums with 8 frames for honey collection. All my deeps will eventually end...
Plastic works great but then I never feed my bees. I do make sure they have wax on them before introduction.
I have to agree, only using deeps for brood (9 frames) and medium supers with 8 frames for honey collection. I have 2 long deeps and intend to build several more to replace deeps.
I agree with Mr.Beeman a frame rest would be a good option. I meant the soil in my yard, it's nice and hard when dry but give just a little water and you have ankle deep muck. There are no bare spots...
Nice job but after first soaker I would have to put some patio blocks under them to keep them from going under. Simple approach and No you don't need any curly Q's on them. :D
