    To answer the original question

    I stuck w/ the HTBH and then got 3 more!

    i think next spring i want to try the Warre Hive

    Very excited about that!

    i've read that you could just keep the one entrance at the front and be just fine ...as it makes the hive easier to protect and less prone to robbing
    but having the extra entrance open can help w/...

    two weekends ago i opened for an inspection and check laying pattern and to open the broodnest...did it in shorts tshirt and no gloves...i did wear sunglasses ;)

    that's the beauty of bees

    did you put a small nail through the sugar/candy on the cage? allowing the bees to eat their way in ?

    i went the leather route as well but found it didn't give me the dexterity i wanted and i still had sweat in there (hot days are hot days...not much to do about sweat)

    you SHOULD start seeing honey soon...but harvestable honey on a first year hive...well that will be up to how greedy you want to be...

    if/when i wear gloves i wear the nitrile disposable gloves...it allows me to be less clumsy and feel the comb

    agreed. before i inspect i give a puff at the entrance and puff myself and hands too....i work slowly and just admire these beautiful creatures.

    not macho at all...perhaps dumb is a better...

    it was very moldy
    it was white to blue mold and not very pretty.

    i just wasn't sure what to make of it what with all the dead bees on the bottom and mold

    my Htbh has a roof (from beethinking)...

    so,

    i inspected today ...went over and looked at a huge pile of dead bees on the ground by the hive legs.

    so i figured i'd look in the window and saw some activity and kept looking at the back...
