Re: bee sting- 1st bad reaction

It just occurred to me that it's irresponsible for us to say continue beekeeping if it might kill you! Listen to you Dr, not me. ;)

Re: bee sting- 1st bad reaction

If you have insurance, an Epi-Pen will cost you less than your $350 ER visit (I think I paid $150) so I say get the pen and keep beekeeping. I have a pen for just in case. My stings swell pretty good...

    Re: Drone bees

My drones were leaving too. And also being kicked out by the workers. I'd see two workers gang up on a drone. I thought they only kicked out drones in the fall? Or if stores are low. Neither are the...

Re: 5 gallon buckets- Home Depot or food grade?

That's what I have. Buckets that held pickles. If after cleaning they still smelled like pickles, would that make the honey smell/taste like pickles?

Re: Hive scent made into a cologne/perfume

I just remembered that I'm too lazy to get this business idea up and running so to you guys, feel free to take this ball and run with it. All I ask is for 10% :D

    Got too comfortable then…BAM!

When I go weeks without getting stung, I get way too comfortable around the girls. I suit up fully when I do inspections but when I’m just hanging out in the apiary, which I do every day after work,...

Hive scent made into a cologne/perfume

For me, part of the joy of sitting in my apiary, watching the bees, is smelling that hive smell. I can't pin down what it's made of. I guess a combination of wood, honey, pollen, wax, bee bread,...

    Re: So long hive beetles!!!!!

LOL. I didn't actually shoot a rocket at my hives. The video was made with an iPhone app called Action Movie. I'd never hurt my bees. Although it would be fun to shoot a rocket! ;)

Re: observe bees is super slow motion

I record my bees in slo mo all the time with my iPhone 5s. Watching them slowed down you realize how clumsy they are. They are always bumping into each other. Falling on their backs. When mine come...

Re: First year and loving it

It's my first year too Steve and I to am loving it. I also had some bees swarm, almost 2 months after the package install. But I caught them in a tree and now have another hive.
  14. Re: Problems keeping city bees...some thoughts from a *rural* (newbie) beek...

This concerns me too. When I replace the fence, I'll either do it myself or if I hire pros, maybe have it done during winter when bees are generally snuggled in the hive. It would be a pain to build...

    Re: Hurricane

I use these that I bought at Lowes to screw in the ground and then ratchet strap the hives down. Good luck. I hope you and your bees are safe!

ok. Thanks guys. I'll just pull the empties off. Why give the bees extra room to police hive beetles?

    dearth in middle Tennessee?

I'm new to beekeeping and have a question. My latest empty supers were added 3 weeks ago (foundation-less frames with no drawn comb). I added supers when the supers under them were 100% full of...

Re: Should I be worried or just wait?

My Lang frames are foundation-less so I could just cut some comb out with fresh laid eggs and either rubber band or use womens hair clips to "attach" to the top bar. I'll probably go with rubber...

Should I be worried or just wait?

I'm a new beekeeper. I have 3 Langs that are doing great. My issue is with my Top Bar Hive. On May 31 about 50-70% of the hive swarmed out with the queen. I did a post swarm inspection and saw about...

Re: 6 weeks in, is everything going ok?

I'm a newb with a TBH too and everything looked good to me. Nice looking comb. Are you worried about something specifically?
  23. Re: papers provide conclusive evidence that the pesticides are causing the mass death

    Point taken. Apologies.
  24. Re: papers provide conclusive evidence that the pesticides are causing the mass death

All I'll say is, it would be nice to have a local source of seeds/flowers that are not pretreated with the neonics. Like eating organically, I should have the choice to chose with or without...
  25. Re: papers provide conclusive evidence that the pesticides are causing the mass death

I'm going to assume you guys are the type that think global warming isn't happening because it snows in the winter where you live. Just because your bees are fine (and I'm glad they are!), doesn't...
