Re: Colony update here in Pa

Checked them today thinking they might need candy. Found one dead, that was my strongest one last year( second time that has happened), The one with the worst hive beetles was plugging along, and the...

Re: entrance reducer and mouse guards...when?

Mine have been on for two weeks. I have had the mice sneak in as soon as the night temps dip so I don't wait.
I did use a new drill to screw them on this year. The girls didn't mind my old one but...

Re: Feeding nucs with out robbing.

I use hive top feeders for my 8 frames and my nucs. They sit side-by-side. No robbing for 3 years now.

    Re: Help needed

Do you still have a queen, if you don't anything you do is useless, try again in the spring, don't treat for problems you don't have. If you have a queen, condense into a nuc, reduce the entrance and...

Re: nucs for hive rathere than 10 or 8 frame

Seems like a lot of extra equipment unless she has a problem with lifting. I use all 8 frame mediums and it is manageable even with some back issues.

    Re: Queen Excluders

I put the excluder on and a new box of drawn comb. Twice this summer, I had to pull that box and make a split from it because a queen went up and laid in the box. I only got a few frames of honey...

    Re: Cracked corn??

That is how I read it. I believe it is considered poor etiquette to knowingly place your hives near someone else's.
  9. Re: What kind of bee is this and should I worry about it.

My husband once said "as long as your suited up, why don't you get rid of the yellow jacket nest by the house." I had to dig them out and the only thing my suit did was protect my face. Of course my...

Re: No bees on flowers lately

I rarely see the bees working the bee friendly plants I have in the yard. The Natives love them so I am content to know my friend 1/2 mile away has many of my bees in her yard!

    Re: Bindweed!

That is one plant I will not encourage for my girls! I do let the wild aster go crazy in the chicken pen. The stuff is 7-8 feet tall (should be 18-24 inches). The birds love the shade and the plants...

Same problem, lots of honey left on in July, all gone now. I will start feeding tomorrow until the goldenrod comes in, 1:1. After goldenrod I will feed 2:1.

Re: strong hive making queen cells

I moved the Queen cells to a nuc because it was easier than finding the queen. I gave the original hive more comb and foundation and also removed some drone cells to do it. The nuc hatched a queen...

Re: Inspecting with out getting stings...?

I do not use much smoke but I am a nurse and I need my hands so I ALWAYS wear gloves. I prefer the dish washing ones rather than thin ones. The girls don't sting through them. I only get a few stings...

Do the splits and queen each, You can put leafy twigs in the entrances to slow their exit and force them to reorient to the new hives,

Re: Advice please...wk 5 check .. Swarm Cells?

If there is nothing on them, let them be. My bees often build what my husband calls threat cells. In other words " lay Queen, you are relaceable". Seriously they are probably fine,

Re: Colony update here in Pa

Checked my hives yesterday and all three were flying, even the two weaker ones. I will be VERY glad when it warms up enought to check on those two and see if they have queens.
