Ben, which variety of privet- seems to be quite a few ?
I had 2 hives fail to requeen themselves with adequate drones last season and 1 this spring, and this was a hive with 14 frames of bees in 2 deeps .
As far south as you are, I would split : the above post pretty much covers it all . 1 medium in your area I would guess would be plenty ,but I am a Yankee
West side of my barnyard is heavy, wet ,grey clay, sweet yellow clover and crimson struggle and so does alfalfa .
Anyone have any ideas, suggestions ?
My second yr crimson clover came and went by the 2nd week of June, and we are running 2 weeks later than normal . White dutch works better for me
Yea, my plastic one is junk- I like metal
Good job Richard - I use photobucket to post photo , an account is free
I looked thru the top deep really well for any sign of eggs or larvae, smoked the bees down really hard down into the bottom deep and placed a queen excluder between the boxes after I reversed...
Good job
In theory yes, but something might happen between then and now, plus your losing1 brood cycle of workers during this time. I am no old timer, but I havent ever killed a queen on inspection
I like the queens I get from Tim A. at Honeyrun in Ohio . I am zone 5 and I like the way they go thru winter, did a side by side compairson with Italian cross hive, and the NWC consumed 30% less...
Good for you Tristan, I am going through this myself, but I didnt have any other hives with eggs. I built a large queen introduction cage, so far so good, will know for sure wensday - congrats
I made a queen introduction cage Thursday, even put some wood around the edges , and placed the laying queen and attendants in and installed. When I opened it today, 20-30 bees were inside with...
Black locust spring, white clover late spring and early summer, not much if anything around here after that . I dont know about the money thing ?
Obviously for me, not enough. I just do a quick peek monthly , through the top and monitor the entrance. I lost one hive last spring due to my "hands off " approach.
Any other ideas folks ?
That has been the case in the 5, mi local around me since 1998. My old coon hunting friend who knows the woods around here since mid 80's has only seen 1 wild hive in all that time
Tough to find nucs and packages now this time of year. I would look locally , then go online. A nuc is a better option
Good luck
I came through winter with one hive, 14 frames of bees in 2 deeps. I checked the hive 5 weeks ago saw plenty of brood in all stages and capped drone cells. I had a northern queen ordered, but from...
In my part of Indiana it goes with only 2 rains of 1/4 " or so, very drought tolerant. Bees will only work it with some dew. It doesnt get over 95 very often here , but grows well in heavy clay soil
1) Shoulda went all deeps- I dont really move my hives anyways
2) Shoulda got into using nucs sooner and northern queens, not the generally inferior queens sent in packages
3) Worry with...
Lost a 2nd yr russian hybrid hive by october, my bad on that. I didnt do deep enough hive inspection ; they couldnt replace their queen and lost some combs to wax moths. Just lost a sunkist hive...
Honey run Aparies is in Ohio , and Tim sells good NWC queens. My russian/italian hive did well its first season however failed to requeen itself and went laying working on me this season , NWC...
ralittlefield:
My experince with only one compairson was my NWC hive consumed 30 % less stores for winter than its neighbor Italian/russian hive
Avg - spring crop, black locust here- nothing inbetween. Looks like with this solid band of rain tonight we will get some golden rod going soon. Lost 1 of 3 hives , other 2 doing well , finally...
