  1. Re: How to best move a split from a Snelgrove (double screen)?

I am interested in using the Snelgrove board so I want to follow your post.

To make the transfer, I think I would have waited until evening or early morning so the bees would mostly all be home....
  2. Re: What would you do....on inspection situation

I would have backed away from the hive, removed my veil, let/get the bee out, then put the veil back on and go back to work.

Re: Thoughts on my wrong split

It has been about 10 days since you posted -- and by now, the capped cells (queen cells cap on day 8, hatch on day 16+/-) that were originally present should have hatched -- have they? It is too soon...

    Re: queen cups in super

I wouldn't get too excited about queen cups anywhere -- unless you see eggs in them. Are there eggs anywhere else in the super?

    Re: Crystalized Honey

I've had this problem also and have read about this before.

If I remember correctly, I seem to recall that nectar tends to be made up of different forms/types of sugars which are then broken...

    Re: Setting up double Nucs

Watch Michael Palmer's videos "Sustainable Beekeeping" and "Keeping Bees in the Frozen North" (( or titles similar/close to that)) and I think they will completely answer your questions --...
  7. Re: Overwinter a nuc or install into new 10F equipment this late?

Michael Palmer's videos might help you answer your own questions -- he made some great presentations to the National Honey Show on the sustainable apiary and essentially, he makes a ton of 5 frame...

    Re: Risk of 2 Queens

So, basically you did a combine of two hives -- one weak and one a little stronger (Nuc)?

You have brood in each box so laying worker problem won't be a problem right away -- I would give them a...

    Re: hive ventilation

I like Vivaldi Boards for ventilation -- I can use them for inner cover with ventilation in the summer and then a quilt board in the winter.

Re: I don't want to buy queens

Do yourself a favor and read up on the subject. I would suggest you buy, and read," On The Spot Queen Rearing" - it is available on line -- and, you could look it up on Youtube also.

    I believe...
  11. Re: What's the time frame for a Queen to exit?

Assuming you removed the cork or whatever the physical barrier is in the queen cage, I have never had it take more than a couple of days for the bees to eat through the candy and release a queen. So,...

Re: Queen excluder yay or nay?

I started out not using them because that was what we were taught in class. Found that there was an unlimited brood nest as MR. Bush says --- but I didn't want brood all through the hive -- I wanted...

    Re: Treating for mites

You can assume that they are all healthy and the allogrooming and VSH traits have solved the mite problem --- or you can test them with the alcohol or sugar roll and find out for sure ---up to you.

Re: little queenless hive wont make queencells

It may not be worth your effort for such a small number of bees so a combine probably makes more sense. However -if you want to try - assuming there were enough bees left to cover and raise brood,...

    Re: BT on wet supers?

I personally have little or no problem with wax moths attaching frames of extracted comb -- unless, it previously held brood. It is my understanding that wax moths primarily are interested in brood...

Re: How to store wet supers?

I am sure there are several options.

I usually put them back on the hives - above the inner cover and let the bees clean them up. Once cleaned up, I can pull them off again and stack them if I...
  20. Re: How well will this fence charger work for bear's?

I don't know for sure -- but, I have that exact model around my beeyard. That one is good for up to something like 30 miles while the total for my "beeyard" might be 100 yards.

    So, I hope it works!

So, just what did you get in the Nuc?

I assume you had some Brood of various ages including capped brood that would have hatched out or be emerging by now and the queen would have laid new eggs...

Look like queen cells but as Barhopper asks - is there an egg or larvae with royal jelly? If so, it is a queen cell and you need to take some action as mentioned above-- if not, they are queen cups...
