  1. Re: Pros and Cons of leaving a supper on over winter

From what I've read, bees don't heat the hive, they heat the cluster.

    Re: Robbing problems

I found it best to do it late at night or early morning before the sky even starts to lighten. Then they have to come out that way and it confuses them less. At least in my experience. YMMV.

Re: D Coates 5 frame Nuc Design

So here is my cut list. I added a 1/8th for Kerf to it already. Thoughts?

    Re: Robbing problems

Yeah works great when you have a bottom entrance. Not so much with a top entrance.

    Re: Robbing problems

I had an issue where my robber screen looked like yours SpringGreen and all the bees in the screen were dead. They were completely crammed in the screen and had a two to three inch hole. I use...

Thanks for all the reply's. I will look into the fence board. I have almost completed my cut list and will post it tonight for criticism. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Re: D Coates 5 frame Nuc Design

Thanks for the info. I plan on adjusting the 5 frame deep, but that will change the cut sheet, since it would no longer be optimized. Trying for as little waste as possible.

    Thanks rookie, I...

D Coates 5 frame Nuc Design

I was wondering if anyone had a D Coates 5 frame medium nuc cut sheet. I can only find an 8 frame. Just didn't want to reinvent the wheel if it's around. If not I will figure it up and make it...

    Re: Help

They don't make qc if they have laying workers. They think they are queen right. Are you sure you saw eggs all over? I would put in a frame a week for three weeks., so two more. That should...

    Re: Fall Nectar Flow

I was out at the hives last night and I could smell some curing going on. So they found something to work. I won't check the weight again until Saturday, but will be interested to see how much they...
  11. Re: Are landing boards simply just a waste of wood? ( and paint? )

Geez BernhardHeuvel, take a chill pill. I'm pretty sure no one was bashing your long landing board thoughts. Why must you bash anyone else's? To each their own, this should be a place to share...

    Re: Pile of dead bees

I was thinking pesticides as well, but it wasn't that many, just wasn't sure since I heard that as well but couldn't find where I heard that. I don't think I have had any robbing, small attempts...

    Pile of dead bees

I have had a pile of dead bees outside one of my hives for the last week or so. There are probably around a couple hundred. Most of them look like drones but there are some workers with their...

Re: Not enough space --mad bees

I've never had Buckfest, but have heard some people say they can be mean. I would think it's just the time of year. When the fall flow starts in your area, see if they are more docile then. Like...

Re: Not enough space --mad bees

If you are using foundationless frames, it's best to bring a frame up. If you have foundation then I still would if I could, if I can't at least they have a "ladder" to get to the top of the frame...

Re: Not enough space --mad bees

My guess is your in a dearth and the bees get testy around then. Are they still building comb? Are all frames filled out and bees on them? At this time of year I don't do inspections unless there...

Re: Opening hive, check, more advice?

I wasn't trying to imply that you didn't have a plan, I just didn't see one laid out. My plans often change depending on what I see, or it's something for next time. I tend to spend less time in...

Re: Opening hive, check, more advice?

To me personally, I always go in with a game plan. I don't just open the hive up for no reason. Even if it is to learn, have some objectives in place. Sometimes I just pop the top and don't pull a...

    Re: Oxalic Sublimation Temp?

I just looked at some that are offered out there and made my own. I used a block on aluminium from ebay and cut it to about a 4x4 block. I drilled a hole for the glow plug, a hole for a set screw...

    Re: Oxalic Sublimation Temp?

At 315F OA starts to sublime and will until it reaches 370F at which point it will decompose to Formic Acid and Carbon Monoxide I believe. So, anywhere in between 315F and 370F, but when i made...
  24. Re: Inspections without all the squished Bees

I usually set my box down like a book. The front side first and then slowly lower the back side. They move out of the way as it goes down. I sometimes squish a couple but usually rare.

Re: Top entrance Should I have One

I guess it's possible. I had a spacer like yours last year and never had a mold issue. Maybe the conditions are just right?
