    Re: ? for MB re:Honeyflow.com

I bet this contraption will go the way of so many other "all-ya-gotta-do" absurd ideas from the past...no matter what endorsements are given. Just wait until there's Rape nectar being gathered. :)

    Re: "Fringe Genetics"

    G

Well, you're assuming that the colony swarms itself to death. Not true. And because you've never seen it happen you think it must be an abnormality and an error in judgement and therefore some...

Re: -40 f windchill in central NY

I think they pay for any losses above 17.5%. I know one county in MA that has approved that a lost colony equals one loss, and if you split a colony to replace it, it counts as two losses. That would...

    Re: "Fringe Genetics"

I think it absurd to believe that because one doesn't know the answer to a bee question that it must be "fringe genetics". There is no such a thing.

Just why do you think that for every...

Re: -40 f windchill in central NY

Did you all know about the USDA program to help pay for winter losses of we have a severe winter? They pay $80 @ for lost colonies if temp remains below 14F for 7 consecutive days.
  7. Re: Anyone know when queen will start laying in New England?

Jadczak in Maine makes observation hives in January for the farm show. Finds palm size patch of brood about every time.

    Re: Opinions on Protective Clothing

You must have a dark watch band? They are going after the color contrast between the band and your skin. I used to wear a dark band and got stung lots. With a silver band almost never.

Re: When to move nucs off a hive

Any time when the day time temps are warm enough for flight and the night time temps are 45-50. In Brooklyn I would say that's late March or early April.

And aren't the pupae beautiful when you do it that way!

    Re: Schedule F ?

I've filed a schedule F for decades. One advantage of being agriculture is you don't have to file quarterly...as long as you file by March 1. To do so, 51% of your income has to be from agriculture.

Re: Screwed up year not sure what to do

FP, over the years, I've held the same idea as you. I'd give the Queen just one more chance. The colony would come out of winter in poor condition. That when other colonies in the apiary were in good...
  18. Re: Big population hive . Management to achive that

The suggestions above are good. You have to have a healthy, well fed colony coming out of winter, to build a populous colony ready to make a honey crop. But much of that buildup has to be linked to...

Re: Screwed up year not sure what to do

Yes, probably. I might give the colony bits of emerging brood from a strong colony...only as much as it could keep warm. As the donated brood emerges, the population grows and a larger amount of...

Re: Screwed up year not sure what to do

Sometimes we have to accept defeat. The choice is yours, but I would let it be and make a split from the strong colony when the conditions are right, and buy a new queen. Is losing a queen from a...
