If there are a lot of cracks and openings try covering the whole area with black plastic and sealing the edges.

Pull the nails and lift the whole sheet of plywood.

I used a (home made) bee vac to catch a swarm on a chain link fence. It sucked them into a hive ready to set in place in my apiary.

I too have noticed bees working henbit had a red/orange spot on their head. If you look in the flower you can see a small red dot in the top of the "hood". It grows wild here.

Depending on how bad it is rusted use medium to fine sand paper or steel wool with light oil or WD-40. Use a small stick cut to the proper size, and wrapped with sandpaper to clean the mortise slot....
