    Re: unusual activity water collection

The two times of year that I see water foraging ramp up are early spring when bees are diluting honey for eating, and when it gets real hot for cooling.
  2. Re: Too late for bees to draw out foundation (August) ?

A nectar flow and good population of bees, including young bees, will get foundation drawn. It helps if the foundation is in, or near, the broodnest. Like others have said, make your split with...

    Re: backfilling

Count yourself lucky to have a nectar flow! Make sure some of that comb in the super is as close as you can get it to the broodnest.
  4. Re: How concerned about inbreeding are you backyard nuc/queen producers?

The eastern forests, woodlots, and occupied and abandoned structures are full of honey bees. You'll have no problem with this aspect of raising queens.

    Re: Building nucs

As long as you can add enough resources (like drawn comb, honey, syrup, brood and bees, etc) to your splits, and since you are using mated queens, it's very doable.

    Re: Advice Needed

Right. But the capped brood emerging should be the first significant area for her to lay in. It wouldn't hurt to have some open comb in your added mix.

    Re: Advice Needed

I'd add two frames of brood with bees (watch out for the queen). Give them a couple strong full frames with plenty of brood. That will jumpstart your nuc with a good population of bees soon. Also...

    Re: No Honey (yet)

The queen excluder can impede the bees from moving up into the supers of foundation. Usually you should not put on an excluder until you have drawn comb in the super, and they are starting to work...

Re: Hive is dying fast. Now what?

Wax moth problems are usually from the hive dwindling for some reason, like lack of a queen. You really need to find out if you have a queen, or eggs. That will probably answer your question about...

    Re: Young larva too young?

Mike reunites 5 days later when the cells are capped. Maybe he'll comment on the nuances of that vs. next day.

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

What a difference two or three weeks makes! At one point you were wondering if the comb supers would even go on. Just shows as beekeepers you have to be ready with equipment. If you have to stop...
  14. Re: Where to find control box (rheostat) for elect uncapping knife

Thanks to everyone for the great ideas. I contacted Pierce (thanks for the link Knisely) and just got a reply from them. They said they changed the control box to hard wired since so many people...
  15. Re: Where to find control box (rheostat) for elect uncapping knife

This is the Pierce without the thermostat. No adjustment screw. Vintage 1977. It was donated to our association. It cleaned up very nicely, but is much better controlled with the adjustable box....
  16. Re: Where to find control box (rheostat) for elect uncapping knife

I didn't see it listed online, but when I called they said to call back between 7:30 and 3:30 to talk to the fabrication shop. I'll post if I find anything.
  17. Re: Where to find control box (rheostat) for elect uncapping knife

Yeah, that could be the way to go. They do make heavier duty dimmer for higher loads, though I don't know what the load on the Pierce hot knife is.
  18. Where to find control box (rheostat) for elect uncapping knife

As title says, looking for a supplier of one of the control boxes that some uncapping knives used to come with. Our association has a good knife donated from a former member and it is without the...

    Re: Propolis Preference

I have one line of bees that originated from a swarm trap 5 years ago and they collect only bright orange propolis (in large quantity too). Most of my other bees are working sources that are reddish...

  21. Re: Nectar source after locust and poplar in NE Maryland

All of us in the mid atlantic region have the same problem. If we get moderate rain through the summer, they often find some nectar. If we get the typical hot dry July and Aug, there won't be much....

Re: Hive combine went well, but advice needed

Since warm weather is here, and you have plenty of bees, move boxes or frames at will. Checkerboard your undrawn frames with the drawn. If you have a flow they should draw them out.

    Re: 3 or 4 mediums?

My honey production operation is all medium 10 frames. The grown up hives winter in 3 to 5 boxes. Often the bottom one or two are empty, except for pollen, by end of winter, beginning of spring. ...

Re: Bees hanging out on hive porch at night

Why don't you open the entrance up to the next size. It lets them ventilate easier.
