Re: 5 gallon buckets of crystallized honey

I use an old freezer with a thermostat set at 104 and a hundred watt light bulb. Setting the bucket in the cab of a pickup in the sun with rolled up windows on an eighty degree day works well too

Re: Moving bees from mediums to deep brood box

Pul the frames in the mediums with no brood and replace the up and down ranks with deep frames. Keep moving the mediums to the outside and when broodless, replace them with deep frames.
  4. Re: Experience with double front blue jeans and a bee jacket?

Bees don't actually seem too interested in your legs. I often wear a jacket and shorts. Or just a veil, tee shirt and shorts. When pulling honey or dealing with the occasional bad tempered colony,...

Re: Steam release of old comb

ANY plastic foundation goes away when steamed to salvage wax. It gets real hot in there. Water boils at 212 F and steam can be even hotter.

    Re: bottom board 'rim' question

Mine are 1/4" which work great for me and there only flaw is that an OA vaporizer won't fit thru them. I think I could make a wooden adapter or rubber for that matter that would fit over the exaust...

Re: do ten frame boxes increase starvation?

I would be inclined to believe your cluster was pretty small if it could not stay in contact with food. My solution is a newspaper on the top bars and a ten pound bag of sugar in a feeder rim. Just...
  13. Re: Mixing uncapped honey with sugar to make winter feed?

Absolutely none! Sounds like a good way to utilize the unripe honey if you don't want to eat it or make mead.

    Re: Which foundation?

The plastic works fine and is trouble free compared to wax or foundationless. If you don't extract, you can scrape off the comb and the bees will redraw the plastic base just fine. Wax moths or...

    Re: Drones all winter

At least in my bees it seems to be a matter of genetics. The carniolan line seem to take a few drones thru winter and the Italian not so much.
