I thought I read somewhere that you already have bees. Why did you order more? Just curious?

Re: Added my second Deep, so now what?

Maybe observe the bees and see if they are bringing in pollen. If they are them they are most likely bringing in nectar. Does Colorado have clover?

    Good luck with 'da bees!

Re: Uh..., what's the sponsor advertising?

Ads are based on "cookies" gathered from your computer based on your search habits.. For me, the ad on the right shows high performance diesel truck products.

    Re: Grafting Attempt

My first try I got zero out of 12. Second try 1 out of 10. Third try I got 9 out of 20. Keep doing it, you will get better. Look for the tiniest "c" shape in the cell. I need reading glasses and a...

Re: Q Cells capped too soon?

Thanks. There is so much of the whitish fluid in the cell that the Chinese tool has trouble lifting the larva out without bending backwards and depositing the larva on the side wall. That could also...

Re: Q Cells capped too soon?

I did some more researching and found that they could indeed be capped in 3-1/2 days like some of mine were.

    Q Cells capped too soon?

I tried my hand at grafting 20 larva into cell cups early on Saturday.
This afternoon I checked to see if they took and there were 8 just capped and 3 more being drawn out.
    According to the chart...

I checked out this method and would like to try it:
Can I substitute pollen and honey combs for those "dummy" frames that are shown in the box above the queen excluder?

    Re: Neighbor Issues

Prove they are your bees and not some feral hive in the area.
  13. Re: Are you ready for the Odfrank overwintering challenge?

Out of 5 big colonies and 12 nucs I lost 2 big colonies and 8 nucs leaving me with 3 bigs and 4 nucs.

    Re: Found old boxes.

How can everyone tell that these are "survivor" bees and not a swarm that moved in last year?. How do we know this hive hasn't "died" every year and a new swarm hasn't moved in to replace them?

Re: Trading Honey....anyone up for it?

It might be neat to try and swap queen bees to get new bloodlines and breeds into our apriaries. I have Italian mutts but will be picking up two Russian hives come April.

  25. Re: Are you ready for the Odfrank overwintering challenge?

KQ, it is a managable problem. Just completed my second year and I saw more beetles this year. It was a hot, dry summer and maybe that had something to do with it. I did a cut-out last March and that...
