I prefer to put my queen in the small split and let the strong old hive raise the new queen, but that's just my preference...
Bees won't take syrup if the syrup is below 50. So, it takes a high temp enough above the low to bring the syrup up to 50 for the bees to take it. I think it is too late for hive top feeders at least...
Is it possible that this is actually the hive that kept the queen? Perhaps the other have had to raise a queen resulting in a break in the brood cycle, which knocked the mites down?
Or, the queen...
I did a few splits this year and kept them in the same yards. I can tell you that most of the bees will return home no matter how many bees you put in the nucs. But, they will leave enough bees to...
I also did a equal split and the hive without the queen (in the original spot so had most bees) swarmed. I'm guessing a virgin queen but she is laying now. I am still learning how to prevent swarms,...
Interesting, I just decided yesterday that it was too hot for the suit and did my inspections in shorts and a tshirt. I did wear the veil. And ... well no more stings than usual. Just the occasional...
I'm going to check it out now. I've been looking for a good method of record keeping.
A mobile app would be great. Also if there is a way to access/update without online access even if it syncs...
Thanks for the advice. As usual, MB suggests what should have been obvious but somehow I overlooked it. I also may try ordering some of the recommended ones for my own yard.
Thanks again!
I am putting some bees in a friends yard. They are really excited about it, but their son is a bit nervous about bees and wasps in general. So, I want to be sure to put super friendly bees there....
Thanks. Always good to hear from simeind like you thst I'm on the rig
ht track.
If you don't have eggs in the hive, it is probably best to replace the queen that is there even if there is one. If the one there is laying you have a spare queen. I've heard, although never tried...
Probably bad advice, as I am also a second year beek, but ...
If you really want them to draw it, put it between two brood boxes. They'll draw it in a hurry, but probably fill it with brood. If...
That really isn't a substantial amount of dead bees. I wouldn't be too concerned. You probably just had more dead ones in the package that they have cleaned out. Or, there were more outside the hive...
I have also noticed that when hiving a package, you can often end up with bees under the screen. I assumed they just tried for the hive and it is easier to smell the hive through the screen than the...
I also made a split (walkaway) on the 22nd of April, making sure to have eggs and young larvae in each half (couldn't find the queen). Last week Wed, it was clear which half had the queen (lots of...
This weekend, I tried to do my first split. I had an overwintered hive that was filling a medium and two deeps. I couldn't find the queen, so I couldn't do what I planned, which was to take the queen...
I was wondering if I should put the drone comb back (I did take it out to freeze it) or if they shouldn't be wasting their resources after the split. You make a good point about waiting for treatment...
Don't be too concerned. If your bees land on their back before flying off a wet landing board is enough to kill them. It doesn't need to be deep enough to drown them. The surface tension of the water...
I did add the second box right away for just that reason. Thanks.
So, it sounds like I shouldn't need to feed, but it probably wouldn't hurt if I did. If I do feed a hive that is raising a queen,...
Yesterday I decided to split one of my strong hives. It was 2 deeps and a medium. My plan was to just take a few frames of brood with the queen and leave the rest of the hive in place. But, I...
I'm pretty new, too, but I doubt it is a huge mistake. They'll be fine. Just might be a bit harder for them to keep warm, but it shouldn't be a problem. Especially if they have drawn comb. I think if...
So, after noticing a high number of drones with DWV in one of my hives, I scratched some drone brood yesterday and it seems that I have a lot of mites. there was probably mites on 1 in 10 of the...
I'm pretty new; last year was my first winter, but all three of my hives made it with the SBB open all winter here in WI.
Is it a good idea to put packages in the place previously occupied by strong hives so they pick up foragers?
I am getting 3 packages this week and I have 2 strong hives that made it through...
Thanks for all the advice! Cinder blocks and landscape timbers it is. I wonder if it also might help in the winter to slide the hives together. But I have plenty of time before I worry about that.
