    Re: vaporizing nucs

Not too critical, I use 1/2 tsp for full sized hives, and just eyeball a smaller amount for smaller hives and nucs. Never had any bad effects from the acid, I think the dosage needs to be super high...

Re: Swarm cells in August (SW Ontario)

I'm in SW Ontario and had the same thing happen. I had a couple of nucs I plan to overwinter start cells a couple weeks ago. Generally I don't consider the location of the queen cell a factor in...

Re: How to lower moisture content

I think the issue is that with honey in a pail there is very little surface area for moisture to evaporate. A solution would be a very large shallow pan but that's impractical. Or maybe hang a bucket...

    Re: Deep fried Bees?

A couple of weeks ago I cut out some comb to rubber band into frames. I had a piece of capped brood comb the size of my palm that was too curved to fit into a frame well. I crushed it in my hand...

Sticky: Re: Please Post your Swarm Dates?

Windsor, Ontario. Got a call from someone who found me on Beesource. Small swarm, probably a couple pounds. Found 2-3 queens that look like virgins so probably an afterswarm. Added frame of brood,...

Re: Are eyelets a must for wiring frames?

For what it's worth I have wired up frames for foundationless without using eyelets. It will cut into the frame a little over time but it isn't a big deal. If the wire does loosen slightly (due to...
  8. Using a Cut-Down Split as a Cell Builder

Well I came out of winter with 9/10 colonies so I did well, but many are weak. Some of my queens are from walk away splits last year, and were pretty small and I think a large part of my problem so...

Re: Video of worker offloading some pollen

It has been my experience that if you actually see mites during your inspection you have a problem. I would do a sugar roll or alcohol wash so you really know your mite levels. I was too laxed...

Re: Video of worker offloading some pollen

Nice video. Anyone catch the bee with the mite on it at 0:20?

Re: winter dead-outs with small bees??

I've noticed the same think in several of my hives. Not sure what the cause is, hopefully someone will chime in.

Re: Hi, new member from Canada

Welcome to the forum. I see you're in Amherstburg, ON. I'm only about a 20 minute drive away from where you are (Essex, ON). If you ever want to talk about anything local, or need local advise...

Re: Pollen dates for Southern Ontario

I'm about as south in Ontario as you can get, and I think it will still be at least a couple of weeks. I believe maples bloom here first. Hopefully this nice weather holds up, its been a tough winter.

Re: grooved frames and comb guide

Ya I have used comb guides in groove top frames. I have a band saw, so I cut strips that fit tight into the top groove and just add a dab of glue so I know they won't fall out with the weight of...

Re: tree stand for swarm trap

I put a trap up in my deer stand this spring while turkey hunting and got a swarm. I don't know if I would go through the effort to build something like a tree stand just to hold a swarm trap, but...

    Re: Drones this late?

It is possible that they don't have a queen....haven't looked in my hives in a while. I can't get a queen this late anyways, so I just made sure they had stores and kept them closed up to sort any...

    Drones this late?

Yesterday we had some pretty warm weather here. I went and took a look at my hives to make sure no mice would be getting in over winter and there was a bunch drones hanging around. I'm new to the...

Re: Getting Mann Lake to make 4.9 plastic

Here is the message I sent. I did not directly email anyone, but used their contact page on there website:

Re: Getting Mann Lake to make 4.9 plastic

Well I actually contacted mann lake, and they responded saying:

"Looking forward to '14, we don't have plans for 4.9 Rite Cell sheets"

    Too bad.

Re: Getting Mann Lake to make 4.9 plastic

I really wish they would make some 4.9 plastic, and based on this thread there would be a market for it. I don't want to deal with ladder comb or flimsy frame problems that the "pf" frames have. Also...

Re: Do these look like queen cells?

Those are capped drone cells. In the top picture you do have a queen cup at the bottom of the frame, but as long as it doesn't have royal jelly or a larva in it you are fine.

Anyone else wish that Mann Lake made some 4.9 foundation based on their "pf" series of frames? I would like to try the small cell, even though the benefits are controversial but don't want to deal...

Re: Can't find a single mite?

All of these hives had brood breaks this year so I'm guessing that is why I'm having no mite issues. But not being able to find a single mite is strange.

As to the lineage, I have no idea where...

    Can't find a single mite?

I started this year with 3 full size hives. Since spring I have split them so I now have 10 hives (a few are not quite full size).

On the three original hives I have screen bottom boards and have...
