Re: How's the flow going for you?

In April, it was questionable, but boy is she going now! The production hives are really packing it in, and the nucs are getting honey bound. I keep having to rotate new frames in and out of them....
  2. Re: When is the best time to use a Queen Castle

Since you have 15 hives, you have the perfect opportunity to raise your own queens. Then you can requeen, sell queens, make splits, whatever. Take your best hive, and take out the queen, on a frame...
  3. Re: Foundationless from the bottom up............

Any way you can put the empty frames next to a drawn out one, or at least next to one with foundation? I am foundationless also, but will use a sheet now and then to make sure they build straight,...
  4. Why I decided to buy my equipment, instead of build it.

When I first started keeping bees, I built everything expect the frames, and those I bought unassembled. As you all know it saved a ton of money. When I went sideline though, my thinking changed. ...

    Re: nuc prices?

I sell five frame nucs for $150 in a Mann Lake waxed nuc box. They are booming and all five frames are fully drawn, no foundation. I think I could get more, a guy 70 miles north of me, sells...

    Re: Queen breeding question

My mating nucs are near my strong colonies. Not in the same yard, but near them. The hives are foundationless, so I have more drones than most, which is what I want. The hope is, that they will...

    Odd queen balling situation

I had a two frame mating nuc in a queen castle, the new queen was laying really well. I took the two frames and put them in a five frame nuc with an empty frame, a frame of open nectar, and a frame...
  8. Bee Culture magazine. A pleasant surprise.

I subscribed to Bee Culture magazine around 20 years ago. When I got it then, it contained about two poorly written articles and about a thousand advertisements. I took a chance and subscribed...

Re: Moving nucs into full size hives

Take the boxes away. As long as they are there, they will contine to go there. Stuff some grass or something in the entrance of your moved hives. This should cause the bees leaving to reorient.

Nice pics of the queen cells.

    Re: queen bee mating

I think the general consensus is around 70 during the day. A virgin queen will usually mate then. Have you just seen one queen cell, and have you seen your queen?
  12. Re: There seems to be a lot of problems........

I think what some people forget, is that as a beekeeper, you are dealing with a non-domestic animal. They are not dogs. They will not come when you want, they will not roll over, and they won't...

    Still get excited

Even after yeárs of keeping bees, I still get excited when I open a mating nuc and see a brand new queen walking around in there laying eggs. I checked some today after work, and there they were. ...

    Re: Bee Color

My strongest hive is a bunch of black mutts, headed by a three year old queen, who is still laying like a champ. But those old yellow bees were pretty to look at.
  15. Re: I need some advice about queen and queen cell

Any evidence of the queen? If they are swarm cells, I would see if I could find the queen, remover her and a few frames of bees. Put them in another box/nuc to start another hive. I would then let...
  16. Re: How long before inserting your queen cell do you make up your mating nuc?

I have my cell builder in one yard, and I makes up my mating nucs in another yard. I make the nucs, drive them to where the cell builder is located, and then put in the cells. The cell builder yard...
  17. My new nuc boxes. No a paint factory did not explode!

Pictured our my new nuc boxes I had built by the local Mennonite wood shop. My 13 year old daughter put her usual artists flair for the finishing touch. I know it looks like a paint factory...
  18. Re: Since 1980 this is the worst April Non-flow I have every seen...

Just goes to show you how local beekeeping really is. I am 60 miles East of you UT. I have plenty of pollen, but not much nectar coming in. Odd. I do think though, that May and June will be good...

    Re: Freeze warning question

I've never seen them do much good in the south either. I run all solids, and if I am worried about air flow, I crack the top back.

Newly laid eggs AND queen cells.

During inspection today I found three beautiful capped queen cells. Dang, I thought, missed that swarm. It has always been my experience that when I found capped cells, they had already swarmed or...

I caught a swarm last year from a tree, I know bees have lived in that tree for at least 15 years. I can't say for sure if they have been the same colony or not, but the queen in that swarm is...

    Re: Definition of a nuc?

Jim. I totally agree with you. I sell exactly what I would want to buy, if it was me paying $150 for bees. I don't understand when someone sells a four frame nuc, and call it a five fame nuc, just...

I would wait and see what happens with the queen cell. Technically they are not queenless if they have a cell. Laying workers would not start for a couple of weeks or so, if something happens to the...
