  1. Re: What good girls I have! And a question. Or two.

I feel like my mistake with the smoker going out is not letting it burn for long enough prior to the inspection. Get the fire going really, really well for 3 or 4 mins, then close the lid. At least...

    Re: After a split...

Well, my house is in the burbs and less than ideal for beekeeping. I would move them to my house for a couple weeks, then move em back. I do have one good spot for a hive at my place, but it's on...

    After a split...

How long til I can move the "split" hive back to the same hive stand as their original homes?

I'm planning on splitting in a few weeks, moving new hive miles away...

But if like to move it...

    Re: Just got nucs yesterday....BUT

They took a pint of syrup in 18 hours. It's got me wondering how much honey they have if they're hitting the syrup that hard.

    Re: Just got nucs yesterday....BUT

It was also neat to me to see some of the girls airlifting the drones out of the nuc today! They sensed the cold and said time for the boys to leave! Lol

    Re: Just got nucs yesterday....BUT

Thanks for the comments so far! So I do find it interesting....one of the nucs has hardly any sound coming from it and the other 2 are REALLY buzzing. Kinda weird!

    Just got nucs yesterday....BUT

It was 36 degrees...strong north wind...sleet and 2 inches of snow last night. My mentor suggested NOT hiving them, but screening the entrances and keeping them in the garage until Sunday or Monday....

    Re: Splitting New Nuc

    Michael-

The queen won't arrive til the week of the 13th of May, so that seems online with your suggestion, or close to it. Thank you for the advice!

    Re: Splitting New Nuc

I think they just meant bees are starting so slow, I won't be far behind other colonies. Thanks for the reply! I just hope I do it right if I decide to do it.

    Splitting New Nuc

So, its been so cold this year, that several people in our bee club have told me it would be okay to split 2 nucs I have coming in this weekend. I am going to use a beeweaver queen for the new...

    Re: making bulk syrup

Here's something our bee club has been discussing here in Omaha...

If you have the time, you don't need to heat the water at all! If you stir it cool, for about 10 minutes, and then let it set...

    Re: Can bees fix this?

I'm starting with nucs, so I'll have 5 good frames of brood and comb. I'm thinking I MAY just stop being a cheapskate and order some new Duragilt just to make sure the bees are happy. I only have 2...

    Re: Can bees fix this?

There was a bit of mouse damage as well. Should still be able to use them, right?

    Re: Can bees fix this?

I took a paintbrush to the webs and got "most" of them off. I will bag em and freeze em for a few days. Thanks for the reminder

    Re: Can bees fix this?

Or would it just be better to buy a few new sheets of foundation?

    Can bees fix this?

Had some frames that had a bit of wax moth/ SHB damage. If I scrape off the worst of it like this on like 2 frames, will the bees be able to repair it? Or better to buy all new sheets of foundation...
  18. Re: Modify Mann Lake Top Feeder for less drowning bees?

So you use no inner cover? Doesn't that still allow bees to get in from the notch in the outer cover?

Just a little confused.... Thanks for all the replies!!
  19. Modify Mann Lake Top Feeder for less drowning bees?

    Hey all...

Not sure if this should be here or in another forum, but I thought I'd ask and HOPE I don't get flamed.

I am starting 2 hives this year, and have purchased and plan to use Mann...
  20. Re: Package bees absconding - Help me figure out what I did wrong.

There it is. At least to me it seems plausible. Are you saying some of your hive woodwork is treated?

That would explain your slow death of bees in the bottom, and the others deciding that...
  21. Re: Does anyone have experience with Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE)

VERY interesting. Imagine the possibilites for another "Natural" way to help with a devastating disease like AFB.

I'm trying to go as "treatment free" as possible.... but AM going to try...
  22. Re: Salvaging foundation with some wax moth webbing

So based on these pics of the worst frame.... Are they salvageable?

    Thanks!
  23. Re: Salvaging foundation with some wax moth webbing

So, HOPEFULLY.... here are some pics of the worst frame of webbing I had. I don't know if these will show up.... Fingers crossed!!!

I will try to get some pics on this thread this afternoon after work. Thanks for the responses all.
  25. Salvaging foundation with some wax moth webbing

Is there any way to do this?

Its plastic foundation, fully drawn. Can I save the comb? Or if not, how do I re-use the foundation? Scrape the wax off, melt it, and redip them in melted...
