    New queen hard to find!

So one of my hives raised a new queen. Yesterday, during inspection, I found her! She looks great. Then I decided I needed to mark her. Ive never done it before, but I saw it and read about it. ...

Re: Paint pen to mark a queen?

Ive never handled my bees without gloves. I will be grabbing her and holding her to mark her. I dont have a marking tube. I was going to test the pen out first of course. I can practice on some...

I am about to have my hive make a queen. Figured I would mark her when she was up and running. But can I use any acrylic paint pen or is there some sort of special non toxic pen to use??

Re: SHB larvae in beetle trap

The queen is laying and there is larvae and capped brood, but there are also queen cells being made. It took her 2 weeks to start laying and I suspect they are superseding her. My other hive was...

Re: SHB larvae in beetle trap

Its a package. I suspect the queen is struggling. There are hundreds of beetles in the trap now. Its a giant tray, there is no place for them to hide on the bottom board. Bees either chase them...

    SHB larvae in beetle trap

I have a freeman beetle trap and one hive that is having a hell of a time with SHB. I'm sitting here watching it now and see no less than 15-20 hovering beetles. I pulled the trap and found a handful...

    Re: Is this bad?

I find it particularly interesting. One hive is going by the book. But this one is "off" and they are correcting the problem. It's fascinating.

    Re: Is this bad?

I THINK that bottom cell is capped but I cannot recall now.

I put all ten frames in the hive. Now, at this point, I am not sure if they are raising a queen because they are out of space and want...

    Re: Is this bad?

Cool. Now, is all the capped cells brood or honey? I have one frame that's almost completely pollen. It's pretty neat.

    Re: Is this bad?

They have room. They have 6 frames. I could put all ten in but was worried about hive beetles. What if I just let them make a new queen? She was not doing so hot so seeing this is not really...

    Is this bad?

I installed the bees in this hive three weeks ago. The queen started laying only last week and this week I see enough larva to count on one hand. I took some pics. Should I wait this out another...

    Queen just now laying eggs

I have two hives. I'm a beginner and I installed them two weeks ago today. I was told by my apiary to watch the queen Last week because she had not laid yet. I now see tiny eggs. Not a whole lot. It...

    Re: Freeman Beetle Trap

Mineral oil. The bottom board is screened and there are no 'shelves' on it. No matter where the beetle is chased or falls through that screen, it ends up in the oil. The tray fits tight so bees...

  18. Hive beetles and hive top feeder...can I put it back?

I was advised to remove my hive top feeder and feed syrup out of a bucket a few feet away until I got my hive beetle infestation (noted in another thread) under control. I dont know that its under...
  19. Re: Hive beetles.....4 days after installing new bees??? HELP!

I did. They said give it a few more days and if no joy, then they'll replace her. For now I'm just happy there is a queen.
  20. Re: Hive beetles.....4 days after installing new bees??? HELP!

I found her. Th paint is mostly gone off of her and her wings don't look good but she is there. I see no eggs though. Ill watch for a few days.
  21. Re: Hive beetles.....4 days after installing new bees??? HELP!

I just looked through my hive with the beetles. I stared at it for 15-20 minutes trying to find my queen. I cannot find the queen. I see no eggs anywhere, but I know she was freed. :/
  22. Re: Hive beetles.....4 days after installing new bees??? HELP!

They aren't in the soil. They flew in and the bees are doing a good job of keeping them out of the combs.

  24. Re: Hive beetles.....4 days after installing new bees??? HELP!

  25. Re: Hive beetles.....4 days after installing new bees??? HELP!

Does anyone know if Orthoboric Acid is the same as Boric Acid and safe to use in a 'cd case trap'? I found it at a local home supply store as a roach poison, but the active ingredient is Orthoboric...
