Re: My bait hive has caught...

No honey bees so far this year, but a lot of wasps. The bait hive at my house has wasps moving in almost every day.

    Re: First Swarm

Nice catch, lucky you was able to see them swarm. I guess it is a good idea to have a extra box around just for something like this.

Re: Tricks to lure them back?

I would not have removed the queen cells if it was my hive, but what is done is done. I would keep trying to find a new queen, local would be my first choice, but I would have 1 shipped if I had to....

    Re: Brand new Beekeeper

Everyone is nervous around bees at first, you will get more comfortable the more time you spend with them.

    Re: What is this flower/tree?

Looks a lot like the privet in my area. The blooms look bigger, but maybe just a close photo. I think privet is the main honey maker for me, followed by clover. Most people do not like privet, but...

    Re: My First Inspection

Nice photos. I do think I have had a queen that dark. Most of mine seem to be a lite amber color, somtimes a little red mixed in. Kind of neat for me to see one that black.

Re: Packaged Bees - Smoke or not to Smoke

As has already been said, having a lit smoker close by is a always a good idea when working bees. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
  8. Re: Never, Never, Never and Never again wear.....

To all you guys that wear shorts and a t-shirt when working your hives, do you not get stung? If you do does it not bother you? Not trying to be critical just curious. I consider my hives average...

Re: Suggestions on Fighting Hive Beetles?

Beetle jail makes a entrance trap, the idea is to catch the beetles before they get inside your hive. The trap does make the entrance smaller however, i will try a couple this year to see how I like...

Re: Years since I've seen a honeybee

I have to agree with c10250, if it is the average italian package it will probably not make it unless you treat. Some folks like MAQS, but it is so warm when I prefer to treat that I can not use it(...

    Re: Ethanol problems

Ethanol has been wrecking havoc on small engines for years now. I have a friend who owns a landscaping buisness, you do not want to hear his opinion on ethanol unless you like hearing a lot of...
  12. Re: aggressive racoon, or fox?, climbs 12 feet, flips heavy lids, eats comb, trap set

I would guess coon, I have caught a couple using mashmallows. They are easy to under estimate, they are smart and strong.

    Re: A strange question?

I do not know of anyone who sells medium nucs in this area. I know you do not want to use a bottom deep, but if you only have a single deep you do not have to move it very much like you would a...
  15. Re: Georgia Beekeepers - anyone seeing swarms yet?

A friend of mines hive swarmed a couple of days ago, about 40 miles nw of atlanta. Time to get the traps out if you have not already.

    Re: Swarm trap saturation?

Good advice, some areas are better than others. If you have the time, one trick I like to do is put out sugar syrup in some different locations on a nice day. I come back later and see if they have...

Re: Still unsure about what type of bees?

In Georgia the Italians are popular and they do well in our warmer winters, but if I lived up north I would try the carnolians. They have a reputaion of over-wintering better in colder climates. I...

Re: First year hives will not swarm?

Bees do not read the rules, l had a hive swarm last year from a new 5 frame nuc in early may. They had plenty of room, they had filled the deep and a medium and had just started drawing comb on the...

    Re: How close to mow?

I lay down landscape fabric and mulch in front of my hives, not too expensive if you only have a few hives.
  22. Re: I know I'm crazy, but what about a buried hive?

Way too much rain around here, since December 2012 my below ground water meter has been covered with mud and sometimes rain. The bees would have to learn to swim at my house.

Re: Bee Package coming 2nd week in april.

If you have not already, watching some youtube videos of how to install a package may help. Having a smoker near by is a good idea, but I prefer to lightly spray a new packag with 1:1 syrup and HBH....
