Grant... you can always get stainless steel bolts (expensive) or use food grade mineral grease like what's used on extractor bearings.
Odfrank... I understand your point of view, but I don't want...
I have about 2 dozen of the exact gates you show and am looking to buy more. They are the best I have found for the smaller producer (500 lbs or less). I put one on every 5-gallon bucket so its ready...
Not sure where to post this since it doesn't seem to fit anywhere under the Associations & Meetings (not local or the others listed).
The American Beekeeping Federation (ABF) has the annual...
I love my upright. I started with a slightly undersize upright. It holds four 5-gal pails at one time along with room for some bottles. You can also put bottles on the door shelves. I removed the...
Beelosopher,
I sell nucs in your area (Manlius/Pompey/Fabius). I have never used chemicals in the hive since getting back into bees in 2001. Nucs are usually in medium frames since I standardized...

I rarely have moisture problems. Typically it is after the bees clean out the extracted frames and then they get damp with some rain. Generally a little bit of blue/green mold the bees...
I have had great success double bagging the supers. First let the bees clean up the frames after extracting. One year I skipped this and had crystallized honey sugar crystals in all the comb. It is...
Jadell, Libhart is correct. Since a medium is 2/3 of a deep, then 3 mediums = 2 deeps. That is clearly shown in Lauri's first picture which shows that 3 mediums stack up to be exactly 2 deeps.

I use all mediums. 3 for brood. Here in upstate NY I winter in 4 boxes as its a long winter!

So over the last couple of weeks I've been building a solar wax melter based mostly on the plans found here on the Bee Source website. It's a bit wider than the plans (28 inches) so I can fit a...
I'm still looking to pull off the summer wildflower honey before my Goldenrod varietal crop sets in.

Yes I saw it, but I believe the main point was do not let comb touch between frames or against the side wall by pushing things together when going through the hive. I believe it is different if the...

I have used natural comb for years with great success... but with a twist. I use regular brood foundation or Pierco plastic foundation in the brood boxes and let them draw natural comb in...
Cow poop/patties are reported to make great smoker fuel... but I've never found a smoker big enough to fit one!

I am in the Syracuse, NY area (Central NY). I winter in 4 mediums. Usually the bees are in the bottom two mediums and so that equates to about 2 1/2 mediums of solid honey as the bottom medium...
rrussell6870, when you say "Stand them up" do you mean put the boxes on end (narrow side up) or the normal way (horizontal)? I can do either. I usually stack them the normal way after extracting...
Like many beekeepers in the Northeast I had heavy losses over the winter. In order to save as much drawn comb and honey as possible from the deadouts I bagged up any of the dry supers back in April...
Thanks Oldtimer. It is setup as you say. Medium box on bottom w/ queen. Queen excluder and two mediums above w/ queen frame in top between frames of brood.

I have a queenright hive raising a couple of queen cells in JZ-BZ cups (just being capped about now). Won't the existing queen want to swarm? At what point should I move the existing queen or queen...
The bees clean out the cells before filling with nectar/honey.
Here's my post from 3 years ago:
"Goldenrod honey is my top seller. Just sold a whole bunch memorial day weekend for average $5/pound (now $8/pound). It crystalizes very quickly though. The honey...
Velbert,
Don't the bees know they have a queen cell? Why would they start more if they have a queen? At what point do the queens start piping prior to emerging?
Weekends are when I have time to work the bees. Most "experts" say to transfer queen cells to nucs 10 days after they were grafted. It would be much easier if I could do this 7 days after grafting...
Thanks everyone.
