    Abnormal brood chamber?

Is it normal or ok for there to be 4 or 5 bars of really nice brood comb then a couple of bars of nectar, pollen, capped honey, then a few bars of comb with capped brood about the size of your palm,...

Re: Using 2X lumber for boxes?

All of my top bar hives are made of 2x lumber. a 2x12 costs less than a 1x12 for some strange reason.
  3. Re: What's the biggest mistake (s) you made starting out?

A better question for me would be "What did you do right?" The amazing thing is, they survived anyway!

Re: Ticks-can't take it any longer. What to do/

The fire ants that have moved in here kill ticks! Lived in Louisiana for 40 years, very few ticks left after fire ant invasion!:D

    Re: Canola?

Thank you, that is a relief! I figured that if they could eat granulated sugar (mountain camp feeding?) they could handle the canola honey. Just wanted some reassurance.

    Canola?

My bees are about 1/2 mile from a large field of canola. Question is Will this honey crystalize during warm weather? I want them to build up stores for the dearth later in the summer. Can they use...

    Re: Shook swarm

No offence taken. Looking back, I did do it way too early. I did a check and found a LOT of larvae that had been pulled out of the comb and dropped to the floor of the hive. I found other signs of a...

    Re: Shook swarm

I caught the queen in a queen catcher and released her in the new box after I shook all the other bees in. She was laying well before. The bees are very calm, and bringing in pollen and sugar water...

    Shook swarm

If I shake all the bees from a hive into another hive box with fresh comb, how long should it be before I see brood? I did this to break the brood cycle of varoa on March 10. Just wondering if...

    Very good apiarie

I don't know if this is where this belongs, but, I just had a most pleasing interaction with the folks at Wolf Creek Apiaries. I thought I needed a couple of queens. I called and talked with Ruth...

Re: How many combs should I expect ?

I put a 3 lb package of Waynes Survivor bees in a Kenyan the end of April last year. They built full combs on 26 out of the 30 bars. 14 of the comb were brood. I split them the end of February. All...

Re: Tanzanian Top Bar Hive with deep lang frames

I just got rid of my last horizontal lang. I had two. one died over winter last year, and the other never built much comb. Don't know why. I had trouble getting the frames up and out of the box...
  17. Re: Ever encountered hostility from other beekeepers over your TBH?

I quit going to the county bee keepers meeting when one fellow almost fainted over the fact that I had put bees I bought from him in a top bar hive. He went on and on about how I was making a...
  18. Re: Moving bees from a Tanzanian to a Kenyan TBH

Went ahead yesterday and shook them into the Kenyan hive. Cought the queen and shook everyone else into the box. Gave them three combs from one of my stronger colonies as a starter (hopefully they...
  19. Re: Moving bees from a Tanzanian to a Kenyan TBH

If I put a queen excluder between the TTBH and the KTBH nuke that would be over it, put the queen up in the top box on some fresh comb, won't the other bees follow her up there? That seems like a...
  20. Re: Moving bees from a Tanzanian to a Kenyan TBH

Thank you Mr. Bush, I was going to put an entrance under the top box, so the bees would have to go up through it to get out to forage. I have had a top entrance on the existing hive. I was going to...
  21. Moving bees from a Tanzanian to a Kenyan TBH

The first bees I bought two years ago, I put into a Tanzanian TBH. (bought a nuke) My reasoning at the time was to go ahead and use the frames. One of the colonies died last year, the other has...
