  1. Re: queen cell after introducing a new queen?

I bought queens for the first time in about five years and the same thing happened in my splits. All fifty had cells started when I did the first check but except for three of the splits the bees...

Re: My TF Trial is over - for the time being

I don't accept the non-acclimated argument. Canadians source their queens from NZ, Australia, Hawaii and California and are able to winter these bees with as much success as locally produced queens....

    Re: Winter losses ?

29% loss so far but with some that are weak it will be higher before April is done.
  5. Re: Questions for the Canuck prairie / peace river folks

A potential market for earlier nuc sales could be to those Alberta beekeepers that winter their hives in B.C.

    Re: Genetics and feed.

Genetics play a big part. Carniolan and Russian bees will use less feed than Italians. I have been raising queens from my own surviving hives for a few years with a leaning towards "carniolan" type....

    Re: Considering very seriously...

You have a good plan but if you wanted to start this year and could source some bees then it is not too late.

Re: Experiments You want to try this year?

I also would like to try something similar to what Crofter is doing but will use two queen boards and excluders that I already have on hand. The idea is to make a split and raise the new queen above...

Re: Bee Math and moving queen cells

16 days is from a fresh egg to emergence. Cells are counted from the grafted larvae which is day 5-6. Day ten from larvae is the latest you want to move the cell.
  10. Re: How much solar gain can you expect from tar paper?

Maybe someone could help with something I've been pondering with these discussions.
Could the colony be getting more benefit from the heated air around the entrances as far as air exchange with...

Re: Its been a cold windy winter

Nice pictures. -31 last four mornings here and calling for same for another week. Can't complain too much though as we had almost two straight weeks of above 0C highs in January. So far this winter...

    Re: Where's spring?!

An arctic high is moving in for the next two weeks with lows in the mid -20's Celsius. Hate these late winter cold snaps. First hive checks usually around March 20th so fingers crossed that warm...

Re: Black Outer Covers in Winter

My hives are wrapped for winter with the outer covers stacked in storage and most of my hives have an insulated inner cover year round.
  14. Re: How long can I keep mated queens in a queen bank.

The longest I have banked queens for is two or three weeks, longer should be possible. You will need to add a frame of emerging brood every 5 days or so.

Re: Do mites fall of of dead bees

I have done alcohol washes from winter deadouts and find mites. Not sure how the numbers can be interpreted compared to samples from live hives though.

    Re: winter losses

Sounds like the colony had a poor queen or laying worker and got robbed out.

At our IPM workshop at the end of January Dr. Medhat Nasr shared results for HopGuard II trials from last fall. Singles in Saskatchewan and doubles in Alberta both achieved 97% efficacy with two...
  18. Re: Making 5 frame nucs to fit side by side on standard bottom boards

I made mine as Levi said with 3/8 sides and 3/4 ends. They winter well eight to a pallet using the same size wrap that I use for my standard size hives. I don't have extreme heat but even with a dark...

    Re: Frigid forecast for 1/5/14

Clyderoad the colder weather shouldn't change food consumption too much. The majority of stores is used in late winter when brood production increases.

Re: Can I treat with Apiguard and feed now?

  24. Re: overwintering 5 frame nucs in a hot house

The concern I have is will they build up too early and outgrow the nuc box. Of course this depends on your local climate and how early you are able to take them outside if you need to work them. Most...
