    queen shut down question

I was feeding some hives this evening and one hive that has plenty of stores and a pretty large amount of bee has no new capped brood. I could not find any larva or eggs, tried to locate queen but...
  2. drying down wet honey in supers

I have seen in the past/current....that moisture can be brought down in uncapped honey by using a lamp for a heat source and a small fan circulation in an enclosure.

My question is, what sort a...

    Re: Struggling nuc

I understand. I do not know when your dearth is however. Maybe at this point the nuc is not worth saving and you/(the bees) would be better off combining those bees with something else. Can't save...

    Re: Struggling nuc

If the nuc means that much, why don't you just go buy a queen? Or if you have other hives, move a queen from a strong hive to the nuc and let the strong hive make a new queen.

  6. Re: Plastic, metal or wood bound queen excluders?

    T

I have a couple of all that you listed and really have not seen and difference in anyone particular other than cost. All seem to work about the same from my perspective.

    Re: Plastic Frames

I pretty much use Pierco frames exclusively and have had similar issues from time to time.

Sometimes it depends on the hive, frames installed from the same factory box at the same time in two...

This question is geared more toward my Ohio counterparts.....

With the recent weather we are having now, what do you all start to look for when setting out your swarm traps?

    I did a quick run...

    RJI_1968

I have been getting the same color pollen here now the past couple of weeks when the weather has been fit. There are a lot of maples just beginning to bloom around here as well as some...

    honey suckle

Is honey suckle a very good "bee" plant, there is about ton of the viney stuff on the fence rows where I am putting some hives in.
  14. Re: When to add a second hive body????

I would say now if you have enough nectar coming in to facilitate drawing comb, or you could move them to a Langstroth and add the second super and start feeding 1:1 syrup if your temps are warm...
  15. Re: Winter patties and pollen patties

Forgive me if I wrong, but I was under the understanding that it is the proportion/amount of pollen in the winter patties compared to a regular pollen patty.

I would suppose they get some pollen...
  16. Re: Ohio Beekeepers - Check Your Hive Weights

Pretty much the same here, all made it through. Saw some bees hauling in some really light colored pollen. Using up the last of some winter patties now. Surprised how well they actually...
  17. Re: Attempting to reduce # of bees flying into the snow

Well.....did you try talking to them? Let them know bees fly, not dive. Or....just don't try to save every bee. They all die in the end.
  18. Re: Sticking Hives next to someone else's...

Maybe you have already done so, but I think a little communication between you, the other bee keeper and the land owner would go a lot further than posting your question here. You may get to know...

    Re: feeding pollen patties

No. To my knowledge, hives don't typically get wrapped in my area. Though some may I suppose, but I never do.

    Re: Foundation

Maybe I misunderstood, but do you deeps for honey as well? I planning on using deeps with wood frames and plastic foundation for everything this year. They wouldn't need wired, would they?

    Re: early spring mite treatments

Ok, so at that time, there may not be much capped brood. OA may be a good choice for early treatments in my case, then follow up with MAQS later. What is the min. temps for OA? I am not very...
