Re: My experiaence With Blue Sky

At the behest of Blue Sky, I am writing to update my experience with their company while attempting to order a custom sized BBWear Deluxe full suit ($175).

Quick version: Ultimately, I am happy...

Re: My experiaence With Blue Sky

I found this thread looking for more info on this company. I have not received a response to an e-mail that I sent over a week ago asking about their custom sizing option and have been calling...
  3. Re: Need Observation Hive Plans for 8-Frame

Actually, I was wrong... The 8 high holds medium frames, and I'm 95% sure ours uses deeps.
  4. Re: Need Observation Hive Plans for 8-Frame

See first post for the 2x4 8-frame style we need. The two deep variety will not work for our observations, but the 8 high might be a good starting point for reference.
  5. Re: Need Observation Hive Plans for 8-Frame

We've never really had ANY burr comb on the glass on the one we currently have. It would be fairly disastrous for us if they decided to insist on building there :( .

    I'm a member of a honey bee...
  6. Re: Need Observation Hive Plans for 8-Frame

Thanks for the suggestion Joe, but the plans that I was readily able to find are for much smaller observation hives than what we're needing. What's more, I was hoping to find something that might be...
  7. Need Observation Hive Plans for 8-Frame

    Hello,

My lab needs to have 3 additional 8-Frame (2x4 vertical) observations hives built very soon. We currently have one that we "borrowed" :shhhh: from the University of Illinois, but I do not...
  8. Re: Blowing Powdered Sugar into the Hive as Mite Control...?

It's probably a good thing I'm here then, because my lab feeds powdered sugar to our bees. Yes, the terrible American variety with cut with cornstarch. The most common thing we've done is to knead...
  9. Re: Blowing Powdered Sugar into the Hive as Mite Control...?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Dr. Oliver's work (I'm actually a biologist as well), and I think I would like to try dusting my new package (my only personal colony) with sugar dust (not powdered...
  10. Re: Blowing Powdered Sugar into the Hive as Mite Control...?

[QUOTE=Rader Sidetrack;787932]Ashley, did you even look at the link I provided above?

You are correct, I missed the link. In my haste I believe I thought it was part of your signature....
  11. Re: Blowing Powdered Sugar into the Hive as Mite Control...?

I'm sorry, I feel compelled to further explain. Powdered sugar in beekeeping is not limited in use to this particular technique (which I am STILL not sure of the name of after searching the forums,...
  12. Re: New Package from 2nd Vendor Also are sick and dying .....

I'm saying that if a toxic nectar source is large, prevalent, and profitable enough to be readily found by and RAPIDLY kill two separate colonies, it seems unlikely that a colony next door isn't...
  13. Re: Blowing Powdered Sugar into the Hive as Mite Control...?

Sorry. In that case, I will go acquaint myself with the search function. >_<

I guess I assumed I wouldn't be able to find anything since I don't know the name of the technique or tool, and...

    Re: successful FL treatment-free?

No rule is hard and fast. ;) My research lab has a very hands-off approach to beekeeping (which is why I'm determined to learn how to properly keep bees this summer), and we've regularly installed...
  15. Blowing Powdered Sugar into the Hive as Mite Control...?

Has anyone here ever heard of a technique where one inserts a device into the hive entrance and then uses it to puff a large quantity of powdered sugar into the hive and all over the bees? Apparently...
  16. Re: New Package from 2nd Vendor Also are sick and dying .....

Toxic foraging seems unlikely if she still has a second healthy hive (that isn't substantially more well established) that isn't showing similar signs (assuming the hives are in the same location). ...
  17. Re: New hives not eating and I haven't found a queen?

Please take my comments with a grain of salt. My experience comes from being a honey bee researcher, I'm not well trained as an actual beekeeper.

    Problem #1 (Bees not eating)
I do have a LOT of...
  18. Re: First hive inspection after new package// dropping frame

Hopefully a veteran will respond as well, but my feeling is "maybe". Your best bet is probably to check the area where you dropped the frame and look for a cluster of bees on the ground since they...
  19. Re: New package: Queen released but not located, all comb filled with sugar water :/

At the suggestion of the package supplier I went ahead and reopened the hive in question today since the weather was perfect. I quickly located the queen (yay!) and also noted that some of the...
  20. Re: New package: Queen released but not located, all comb filled with sugar water :/

This is my only personal hive, doesn't it seem a bit risky to wait that long just to find out there's no queen...?

Also, the weather is a bit erratic and has prohibited foraging for the past...
  21. Re: New package: Queen released but not located, all comb filled with sugar water :/

I misunderstood you as well. I took "hold up" to mean stop feeding.

I'm worried that there's no space for her to lay even if she is present... Will they soon remove the stored sucrose to give...
  22. Re: New package: Queen released but not located, all comb filled with sugar water :/

I only have one fully drawn comb. I can move two frames of undrawn foundation to the center, but can you explain why this would be beneficial (I'm still learning all the tricks).

    No problem...
  23. New package: Queen released but not located, all comb filled with sugar water :/

    Hello,

I opened a newly hived package yesterday and was unable to locate the queen after determining that she had been released. I also noted that all of the available comb had been filled with...
