Re: How Cold Before SHB Die?

The way it seems to work is that the longer your winter, the fewer shb survive. The shorter your summer....the less opportunity they have to reproduce. Shb are a tropical pest. The further south you...

    Re: Another OVA question

Be very careful now. I've seen a video of fatbeeman using a fogger for food grade mineral oil. You do NOT want to use one of those with oxalic acid. I doubt if you are likely to find an oxalic acid...

    Re: Increasing cell size

Keep in mind his natural cells may be smaller than 4.9mm. I have had queens that either could not or would not lay in small cell, so I would not want to guess how successful he might be with even...

Re: Unwanted visitor to the yard...

I don't know this first hand but have been told that once a bear knows what's inside those boxes....an electric fence won't stop them.
    Just a second hand warning.

Re: Bees Only Heat the Cluster, Not the Hive?

There are some fundamental laws of physics that cannot be ignored. Even if their intent is only to heat the cluster, ultimately that heat is dissipated into the surrounding air. The ability of that...

    Re: Missing Bee's

It sounds like a classic CCD. Queen, brood and a few nurse bees left...and the foragers disappear.

    Re: Back ground noise....

I'm not sure we're thinking of the same one....but I've noticed the two month absence of a noisemaker. And while I don't miss his first year know-it-all opinions, I hope his absence isn't the result...

Re: TF and AFB, part deux

I am aware of that. Which makes me confident that they have the good sense to play with AFB in similar isolation. :)

Re: TF and AFB, part deux

Of course the USDA has the good sense to conduct these sorts of tests in such a remote location as to pose no threat to other beekeepers.

    Re: Different Oxalic Acid Vaporizers

And I see that a Bosch glow plug like the competition uses draws around 10 -12A. Not a significant difference.

    Re: Different Oxalic Acid Vaporizers

I'd be interested if the various manufacturers would list the current drawn by their respective products. I read a recent thread where a fellow using a vaporizer had to recharge his lawnmower battery...

    Re: Nuc with mites?

Grease patties used to be the treatment for tracheal mites. I am not aware of any evidence that it helps with varroa. I wouldn't bother.
It does sound like you may have a serious varroa infestation....

    Re: TF until today

A midwinter OAV treatment here would usually be around December or January on a 40 - 50 degree day.

it'll be interesting to see how your sugar roll turns out. It may be PMS.
Edit: I missed the earlier 6/100...and if a sugar roll it is surely higher. Probably PMS.

    Re: TF until today

Thanks for reporting. I've been doing Apiguard treatments this Fall.....and it has been very hard on the bees. I don't see any practical way to do 3 OAV treatments a week apart....or I'd surely do...

Re: TF and AFB, part deux

It is interesting that after all the challenges to his assertion that this 'strong' hive was robbed...finally he confesses that it occurred following an inspection. Childish effort at damage control?...

I think you're missing sol's point. He believes that, in his yards, strong colonies get robbed.

  24. Re: One Dead, another Critical, Arizona Bee Swarm

I'm pretty sure the crux of it is true. A couple of guys working in a yard got stung by a boatload of aggressive bees. One died. Why would anyone care if they got the bee count right?

Re: Is this American or European Foulbrood?

I, too, have seen a number of these this year. It has been a good year for mites. After a couple of rounds of Apiguard...the patterns mysteriously improve.
