    Re: comb as thick as....

I would ask the flow hive people. I am sure they experimented with this.

It sure doesn't look like they are scoundrels that plan on cutting and run with the loot. The more people bad mouth them the more I think they will succeed not only with hobbyist but a complete...

    Re: expanding your brood chambers....

An upper entrance can be a 3/8 hole and that isn't going to make a difference as far as SHB is concerned.

Re: Why are dead bees missing their heads?

It is very unlikely you will get rid of blackberries once they get established. I wouldn't think you would want to. It makes awesome jam. I would suggest moving the hives a few feet.

    You need a...

This is what you have around your hives? How do you work them? You only need a 2-3 ft clearance around the hives.

You got it right Ahudd. I suspect the drones crawling around are old ones that didn't get lucky.

    Re: expanding your brood chambers....

The colony will control what the queen does so if your season has ample forage the colony will continue to grow. Feeding is a fake flow so by feeding you can fake the colony into expansion. That is...

Get chickens to clear out the vegetation and then get a cat.

Don't think so. Check your link.
  11. Re: Getting Nuc! But my set up only has two shallow 8 frame boxes...

That is a make work project. Just let them do their thing and they will go into the deep naturally.

    Re: Split ?

Nurse bees do not have any fight in them they have their whole life ahead of them. Old worn out forgers who are crotchety are the guard bees that have nothing to live for.

    Re: Dead hive alive

You could move this hive a few hundred feet away and see if these bees are scouts looking for a new home or robbers like Dave said.

If you want advice that works go to Michael Bush's site. You didn't need to buy the deep but having equipment in your back pocket never hurts.

Re: how I split a hive without having a queen

I am a little confused on the topic. Is the parent hive queenless? Then there is no viable eggs to make a queen. If the parent hive has a queen and the colony is nasty then you don't want those...
